Donald Trump orders Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into Kavanaugh sexual assault allegations

WASHINGTON DC- SEPTEMBER 28 U.S. President Donald Trump speaks while meeting with President of the Republic of Chile Sebastian Pinera in the Oval Office of the White House

Democrats have repeatedly claimed they want a thorough FBI investigation of Kavanuagh, but Republicans have countered that the nominee went through six background checks and the FBI is not equipped to investigate the public allegations against Kavanaugh that include sexual assault and, more recently, participating in drug-fueled rape parties as a teen.

While Ford said she was "100 per cent certain" Kavanaugh had assaulted her, he said he was 100 per cent certain he hadn't, although he declined to pause the proceedings to allow the FBI to investigate.

In a statement about the new Federal Bureau of Investigation probe, Kavanaugh said this afternoon, "Throughout this process I have been interviewed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, I have done a number of background calls directly with the Senate and, yesterday I answered questions under oath about every topic the senators and their counsel asked me".

President Donald Trump says he'll leave it to the Senate to determine when it will vote on his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

For instance, Judge Clarence Thomas, who was nominated by George H W Bush, has been a Supreme Court judge for almost 27 years and Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who was nominated by the then president Bill Clinton, has served on the bench for over 25 years.

If confirmed, Kavanaugh would consolidate conservative control of the nation's highest court and advance Trump's broad effort to shift the American judiciary to the right.

The call for the FBI investigation came after the committee earlier on Friday voted 11-10 to send Kavanaugh's confirmation to a full Senate vote against Democratic opposition.

"Look at me and tell me that it doesn't matter what happened to me", she said.

The GOP-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee voted along party lines Friday to send Kavanaugh's nomination to the full Senate, with the informal understanding that the FBI would investigate the allegations against Kavanaugh.

UN Assembly Laughs as Trump Touts Achievements
The Iranian president took aim at the Trump administration, stating that its behavior in global affairs is " authoritarian ". Despite Trump's praise, the administration has said Pyongyang is slow-walking toward fulfilling the goals set in Singapore.

A number of Democrats supported the move, saying that it would allow for a more thorough accounting of the sexual assault allegations. "And I think the country needs to be behind it. The Senate must vote!" By the end of the day, Flake had, adding a condition to his promise to vote for Kavanaugh. "I was demanding a connection, demanding that he look at us, demanding that he give us real answers", she said.

Mr Kavanaugh strongly denied the allegation.

Trump said he was "just hearing" about comments from Arizona Sen. Kavanaugh, in testimony that alternated between anger and tears, denied ever doing such a thing to Ford or anyone else. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), who backed Flake's move, there weren't the votes to confirm Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh asserted his innocence throughout his opening statement and questioning by committee members, sometimes in emotional outbursts. Republicans are trying to gain the vote of Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, a state that Trump won comfortably, along with Republican Senators Susan Collins of ME and Murkowski of Alaska.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa., talks during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing with Christine Blasey Ford, Sept. 27, 2018, on Capitol Hill in Washington.

"Everything I know about Judge Kavanaugh suggests he's not this kind of person", Graham continued.

But she stressed that experience as an activist does not matter in situations like her confrontation with Flake.

Trump nominated him to replace Anthony Kennedy, who for years was a swing vote between four conservative and four liberal justices.

"I can say this whole process has affected all of us", he said.
