Tension as Russian Federation provides missile system to Syria

Russia says ‘misled’ by Israel in plane downing over Syria

Russian Federation announced new security measures to protect its military in Syria on Monday, including supplying the Syrian army with an S-300 air defense system and jamming radars of nearby warplanes.

"Israel has been very successful in the last three years in preventing Iran's military buildup in Syria as well as its attempts to deliver lethal weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon", Netanyahu said.

Moscow says Israeli F-16 planes which struck Latakia in western Syria on September 17 later used the landing Russian Il-20 surveillance plane as a "cover", which resulted in the Il-20 being struck by a Syrian air defense missile.

Russia holds Israel responsible for the incident, saying the regime's warplanes "created a risky situation" that led to the downing of the Russian aircraft by Syria's S-200 missile defense system. Russia-which, unlike the United States , feels no domestic political pressure to sweep under the rug a loss of its countrymen's lives due to Israeli action in a war zone-eventually had to speak out forcefully.

Netanyahu spoke by telephone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.

"We will continue to act to prevent Iranian military entrenchment in Syria and we will continue the military coordination between the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) and the Russian army", Netanyahu told reporters before boarding a flight to NY, where he will address the U.N. General Assembly.

Shortly before the downing, Israeli strikes had hit targets inside Syria, reportedly preventing an arms shipment to the Iranian-backed militant Hezbollah group. "That is unfortunate. We think it's the wrong decision, but irrespective, Israel is going to have to come up with solutions to that and keep on defending itself", Oren said. On Monday, Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. But it exposed a glaring flaw in Syrian and Russian military cooperation, which Moscow is due to close with the S-300.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said Moscow had in the past obliged Israel by refraining from supplying Syria with the system.

Konashenkov also said that data showed that the Israeli jets remained over the Mediterranean Sea off Syria's coast after the Russian plane was downed, though Israel has said its fighters were long gone by the time the Syrian missiles were launched.

Shoigu noted that Russian Federation had also meant to supply Syria with the systems in 2013, but had held back because of Israeli concerns. "Today the situation has changed, and through no fault of ours", he stressed.

Peskov said the new measures were decided on to boost the security of its troops in Syria.

Russian Federation and Israel set up a hotline in 2015 to avoid accidental clashes in Syria but Israel is now concerned Russian Federation will seek to limit its actions there.

Russian officials said Syria's Soviet-made S-200 systems, one of which downed the Russian plane, weren't sophisticated enough to identify the Russian aircraft as a friendly one.
