Two mental-health patients in sheriff’s van drown in S.C. floodwaters

More miles of I-95 in SC closed due to flooding | The Herald Sun

Two female mental-health patients being transported by the Horry County Sheriff's Office drowned after the vehicle they were in ran off the road near flood waters in Marion County on Tuesday night.

The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident.

Horry County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Brooke Holden said a sheriff's office van was carrying two "detainees" and two deputies to Darlington on Tuesday night when it was overtaken by floodwaters.

Police officials told The Sun News that the deputies tried to help the victims, but couldn't open the van doors because the water was rising too fast. Thompson says Deputies Joshua Bishop and Stephen Flood have been placed on leave during an internal and state police investigation. That effort resumed Wednesday morning, and Thompson said a specialized crew was being flown in from Charleston to assist.

"High water rescue teams arrived and were able to rescue the two deputies from the top of the van". Due to risky conditions and rising waters, additional search and rescue teams are arriving to assist in the recovery of the vehicle.

The Transportation Department advised northbound motorists to take a wide detour around the area by using I-85 from Georgia through South Carolina's Upstate and on to Charlotte.

It was being driven by deputies from the Horry County Sheriff's Office.

Richardson said the deputies and two patients began the trip that afternoon from a hospital near Conway, where tributaries of the Pee Dee River are overflowing their banks.

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea 'happy' amid contract extension talks
The report further states that the Serie A giants do not want to sell Perisic as the Croatian is one of their best players. Asked if he was considering signing a contract, De Gea said: "I feel really loved at this club".

Thompson said he was concerned with the five deaths, but he said those at the detention center were different. A spokesman for the division told Greenville Online, "Tonight's incident is a tragedy".

Neither woman has an arrest record in SC, according to documents obtained from state police.

WLTX-TV contacted Green's family, who released the following statement, saying they want answers.

"If that road is in an area where it is a flood risk, and waters were rising, why were they driving on that road anyway?" he said. At almost 7 p.m. Wednesday, State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry confirmed the bodies had been recovered.
