Kavanaugh Hearing to Address Sex Assault Allegation Uncertain for Monday, Sources Say

Before Believing Kavanaugh's Accuser

But the spectacle surrounding the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh for the U.S. Supreme Court is a classic case study of how a judicial body that considers itself a cloistered debating society can not escape the political winds that blow outside the building that features, just to the left of the entrance of the marble structure, a statue titled Contemplation of Justice.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., who has said she was inspired to run for the Senate based on the 1991 Senate Judiciary Committee treated Clarence Thomas accuser Anita Hill, told reporters she had Hill's experience in mind when considering how much time and energy should be devoted to uncovering the facts behind Ford's allegations.

"While the committee unquestionably needs to hear from both, there are other relevant witnesses who should be questioned under oath, in a public setting", the Democrats said in their letter.

"What we were trying to do was get an investigation", Feinstein said.

Ms Ford detailed her allegation in a letter sent in July to Senator Dianne Feinstein, the committee's top Democrat.

Hatch clarified that Kavanaugh said "he was not at a party like the one [Ford] describes" and that Ford "may be mistaking [Kavanaugh] for someone else".

"I stand to believe there's no such thing as a "he-said-she-said" case", Linda Fairstein said.

The committee announced on Monday it would postpone its planned vote on Thursday on Kavanaugh's nomination, which requires Senate confirmation, and scheduled the high-stakes hearing on Monday with the nominee and his accuser to testify.

A spokeswoman for the organization, Carrie Severino, sparked a backlash online when she said Ford's allegations describe "a whole range of conduct from boorishness to rough horseplay to actual attempted rape".

"The allegation from Professor Christine Blasey Ford is a serious one that deserves a full investigation", Sanders said in his statement.

NC Officials Evacuated Prisoners In Storm Areas; SC Did Not
Risky storm surges and rising tides have caused coastal areas to be flooded, with water rushing inland from the shoreline. Sooner or later, a volunteer rescue team that had arrived in North Carolina from in came with a ship and rescued them.

"I am willing to talk to the Senate Judiciary Committee in any way the Committee deems appropriate to refute this false allegation, from 36 years ago, and defend my integrity".

However, Senator Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Republican-dominated judiciary committee, said Tuesday that Ford's presence was not confirmed.

Leahy dismissed Republican complaints that the information was coming to light near the end of the confirmation process, arguing that they had rushed the process and failed to turn over records of Kavanaugh's government service.

Ford alleges that at a party when both were teenagers in the early 1980s, an intoxicated Kavanaugh trapped her in a bedroom, pinned her on a bed, tried to undress her and placed his hand over her mouth when she tried to scream.

Republicans had hoped Trump's second Supreme Court nomination would galvanize conservative voters while placing incumbent Democrats in a tough position of having to back Kavanaugh to reassure Trump's base. The committee is expected to vote on Kavanaugh's nomination next week.

Underscoring the raw political divisions prompted by the Kavanaugh fight, Feinstein said she'd only learned of the hearing on Twitter. They came forward in the wake of a 2005 "Access Hollywood" tape that was released in October 2016 in which he is caught saying on a hot mic: "And when you're a star, they let you do it". Kavanaugh has accepted the invitation to testify.

Ford's story has not been corroborated, and many of Kavanaugh's former classmates are speaking out against these accusations.

If the Judiciary committee's timetable slips, it would become increasingly hard for Republicans to schedule a vote before midterm elections on November 6 elections, when congressional control will be at stake.

Leahy did not weigh in on the matter again until late Monday morning, when he joined all of his fellow Democrats on the Judiciary Committee in ordering its chair, Sen. She said there are still a lot of questions, and "we need to know what happened".
