Nomination of Trump's Supreme Court pick Kavanaugh thrown into crisis

Kavanaugh accuser said to be willing to testify before US Senate committee

McConnell says he has "great confidence" in the Senate Judiciary Committee's GOP chairman, Chuck Grassley, who has said he will seek interviews with both Kavanaugh and his accuser, Christine Blasey Ford.

Democratic senators on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is expected to vote this week of sending Kavanaugh's nomination to the full Senate for a final confirmation vote, quickly called for a delay in the commute vote in order to further investigate the allegation against Kavanaugh, according to NBC News.

"I have never done anything like what the accuser describes - to her or to anyone", he said in a statement.

Ford said she never discussed the incident with anyone until 2012, during a couple's therapy session with her husband, Russell Ford.

One of the ironies of that path, of course, is that failure to give Ford a chance to tell her story, and for Kavanaugh to reply, could cause so much outrage that it will be the proximate cause of a Democratic takeover of both House of Congress in November.

After her Fox News appearance on Monday, Conway told reporters at the White House that Kavanaugh has been vetted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on six occasions.

"I don't know if that's fair", Durbin, a Judiciary Committee member, said on CNN. "This should happen before the Senate moves forward on this nominee", Feinstein said in a statement released Sunday.

Mrs Ford, a professor of psychology at Palo Alto University, detailed her allegations in the Washington Post at the weekend.

Ford claimed that a "stumbling drunk" Kavanaugh pinned her to the bed, groping her and trying to remove her clothing, while a friend of his watched.

Four killed as Hurricane Florence swamps Carolinas
Mayor Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune told CNN traffic out of the SC city has more than quadrupled as residents and visitors evacuate. Myrtle Beach, a SC beach resort, was virtually deserted with empty streets, boarded up storefronts and very little traffic.

Trump Jr's dismissal of the allegations against Kavanaugh as both a smear campaign and as mere youthful tomfoolery has become a common reaction on the right across social media yesterday into today. Richard J. Durbin, D-Ill., said Ford needs to be heard but argued that it would be "too fast" for her to appear on Capitol Hill this week. Dianne Feinstein, led a number of Democrats calling for a delay in the vote.

But Conway said such testimony "should not unduly delay the vote".

Feinstein issued a statement on Sunday afternoon in support of Ford and calling for the FBI to investigate the matter before the Senate advances Kavanaugh's nomination.

Two committee Republicans - all on the GOP side are men - Jeff Flake of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of SC, said they wanted to hear more from Ford. And there's nothing Kavanaugh can do or say that will clear his name.

It's worth remembering that these Democrat tactics aren't only meant to sink this nomination - should they end up forcing Kavanaugh to withdraw - but also to damage the credibility of any Supreme Court featuring Trump-nominated (or, let's be honest, Republican-nominated) justices.

Ford was able to escape the assault when a classmate of Kavanaugh's, Mark Judge, jumped on top of them. After her story began to leak, she changed her mind and made a decision to go public.

Sen. Susan Collins, one of the Republicans her own party has been working to ensure votes for Kavanaugh, tweeted that she wants both Ford and Kavanaugh to testify under oath in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

"Through the more than 35 years we have known him, Brett has stood out for his friendship, character, and integrity", the letter said. The panel's vote only serves as a recommendation and Kavanaugh's confirmation can still be brought to a vote in the Senate, where Republicans hold a 51-49 majority, even without the committee's approval.

The Trump-endorsed Republicaninitiallydodged a question about the allegations against Kavanaugh after Friday's Senate debate in St. Louis. Bob Corker of Tennessee, said the vote should be postponed until the committee heard from Ford.
