A former advisor to US President Donald Trump whose remarks in a London pub set off the investigation into possible collusion with Russian Federation has been jailed for lying to the FBI.
In court papers filed ahead of the sentencing, prosecutors say those lies caused irreparable harm to the investigation during its early months.
"Caught off-guard by an impromptu interrogation, Mr Papadopoulos misled investigators to save his professional aspirations and preserve a perhaps misguided loyalty to his master", the statement said.
"A great day for America!"
Papadopoulos had told investigators that the conversation happened before he became a Trump campaign adviser, when in fact he had worked for the campaign for more than a month at the time.
The Russian outreach to Papadopoulos was part of a sweeping active measures campaign aimed at the United States that also included overtures toward other political operatives, cyberattacks, agitation on social media and more.
"The President of the United States hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever could", Mr Breen said.
The president dismissed Papadopoulos as a "young, low level volunteer named George".
In court on Friday, prosecutor Andrew Goldstein said Papadopoulos's cooperation "didn't come close to the standard of substantial assistance".

Moss also said he thought it was important that his sentence send the public a message about the gravity of misleading and, "telling lies to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on matters of grave importance to the nation".
During Friday's hearing, Papadopoulos' attorney Thomas Breen went out his way to praise the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and he also criticized Trump for calling the Russian Federation probe fake news and a witch hunt.
Breen described his client as a "patriot", who wasn't trying to help Russian Federation.
Breen said his client's primary interest was brokering a meeting between Trump and Putin, a move he believed the campaign supported.
"My recollection was that the senator [Jeff Sessions] was actually enthusiastic about a meeting between the candidate and President Putin".
And during the course of that interview, Papadopoulos has made an astonishing confession: despite his repeated denials that he informed anyone on the campaign that the Russians had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton, he "can't guarantee" he did not tell someone. We have seen no entrapment. Papadopoulos' attorney asked for probation.
