Elon Musk smokes marijuana live on web show

A Tesla logo is seen in Los Angeles California

Tesla is under extreme pressure to turn a sustained net profit starting this quarter, as promised by Mr Musk, but in the second quarter it burned through $739.5 million (€648m) in cash and lost a quarterly record $717.5 million (€620m). Musk has admitted that running an electric vehicle and energy company like Tesla is exhausting, and in an interview with the New York Times last month, Musk stated that anyone who could do a better job can take over for him anytime.

The news outraged investors and analysts, as well as the company's board members, who urged Musk to stop posting on Twitter for some time.

Tesla's stock dropped 6 percent in Friday's pre-market session, trading around $263.55 at time of publication. Later, Tesla's eccentric CEO tweeted that he was negotiating the go-private deal with buyout firm Silver Lake, investment bank Goldman Sachs and several other firms, including the Saudi Arabian government. As noted, Musk once tweeted that he was considering selling shares of his company for $420.

Morton joined the company as chief accounting officer with the expectation he would eventually take over for Deepak Ahuja as CFO, the person said. Chief accounting officer Dave Morton announced in a filing Friday that he had left the company this past Tuesday after only a month on the job. It later said that Chief People Officer Gaby Toledano would not return from a leave of absence, just over a year after joining. It said Morton had no disagreements with Tesla's leadership or financial reporting.

"I'm not a regular smoker of weed", Musk, 47, said on the podcast before taking a puff from a joint Rogan said contained tobacco and weed, which is legal in California where the two conducted the interview.

One of Wall Street's prominent short sellers, Andrew Left, has filed a class-action lawsuit, accusing electric vehicle maker Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk of trying to "burn" investors with "objectively false tweets". Musk did, and the image of the CEO smoking cannabis immediately spread on social media like wildfire.

Tesla declined to comment beyond the official filing. The report, which was published by electric car-themed news site InsideEVs, estimated that the Tesla Model 3, Model S, and Model X, were the Top 3 electric cars in the United States in August.

The two men also drank whiskey during the interview, and Musk pointed out that alcohol is also a drug.

Tesla shares fell 7 percent on Friday.
