The Washington Post reported that Rep. Michael Capuano (D-MA) conceded to Boston City Councilwoman Ayanna Pressley after polls closed in the state.

Pressley is the first woman of color ever to serve on Boston's City Council, and is set to break another barrier, becoming the first woman of color to serve in its congressional delegation.

Pressley defeated Capuano by arguing that it was time for a change in representation in the district. Parallels between Pressley and Ocasio-Cortez were quickly observed as Pressley went up against a Democratic incumbent who was first elected into office in 1998.

Capuano said in his concession speech that "clearly the district wanted a lot of change".

The district she's competing in includes a wide swath of Boston and about half of Cambridge as well as portions of neighboring Chelsea, Everett, Randolph, Somerville and Milton.

For Pressley, as with many other ascendant candidates of color, unabashedly progressive credentials smoothed her path to victory in the primary.

'This is a fight for the soul of our party and the future of our democracy, ' Pressley said Tuesday while campaigning in the district.

According to her bio, Ayanna Pressley is an advocate, a policy-maker, an activist, and survivor.

But, she added, "When the challenges we are confronted with are this big, this deep, and growing, I can't and I won't wait my turn". Pressley's positions are also very progressive.

The 44-year-old's upset over a 10-term incumbent congressman underscores the shift underway in a Democratic Party whose base is seeking younger, more diverse candidates who embrace progressive policies.

Both contended that Baker's support among voters was soft and that his administration had failed to make significant strides in many areas, particularly the problems plaguing the Boston-area transit system known as the 'T'.

In a video clip of the moment, her family and staff can be heard shrieking and crying in the background as Pressley begins to hug those around her. And he positioned himself as fervently anti-Donald Trump ― refusing to attend the president's inauguration previous year, voting twice in support of impeaching him and frequently calling him out on Twitter.
