Tropical Storm Gordon drenches South Florida

Tropical depression may form in the Gulf of Mexico this week

Gordon passed over the Upper Keys in South Florida on Monday morning as it slid into the Gulf of Mexico.

After Tropical Storm Gordon drenched parts of South Florida on Monday, the National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane warning for parts of the Gulf Coast - where the storm is expected to roar ashore as soon as late Tuesday.

The system was lashing Florida with tropical-storm-force winds and heavy rains Monday morning, according to the hurricane center.

Additionally the National Hurricane Center is reporting Gordon is expected to bring life-threatening storm surges to portions of the central Gulf Coast, with surge warnings issued for the mouth of the Pearl River to the Mississippi-Alabama border. This is where a tropical storm warning and a flash flood watch will be in effect through Wednesday.

At the time, peak sustained winds were 45 miles per hour, but wind gusts were in the 50 mph-to-60 miles per hour range.

Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero was also in the team against Stoke after recovering from the knee problem which ruled him out of the World Cup.

Gordon is the seventh named tropical storm or hurricane to form in the Atlantic basin this year.

Florence was moving toward the west-northwest near 16 miles per hour, with and maximum sustained winds of 60 miles per hour with higher gusts late Sunday evening, according to the hurricane center's 5 a.m. update. It will likely strengthen a bit, but still stay a tropical storm.

"Any strong tropical storm has the potential to strengthen to a hurricane even when that storm may only spend a day or two over warm waters", according to AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski. Many replies to various National Weather Service accounts or other outlets with their pleas that the storm veer spontaneously away, as the Gulf coast is still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. A Storm Surge Watch has been extended eastward from the Mississippi-Alabama border to Navarre, Florida. As much as 8 inches (20 centimeters) of rain could fall in some parts of the Gulf states through late Thursday. Isolated tornadoes are possible. It's expected to be a hurricane when it makes landfall along the central Gulf Coast by Tuesday night.

Over southern Alabama, southern MS and Louisiana, rainfall of 4 to 6 inches is forecast. This is also where the heaviest rain will remain. A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for a portion of the Mississippi-Alabama border.

The system is brewing about 175 miles (281 kilometers) east-southeast of Marathon in the Florida Keys.
