Supreme Court Nominee to Face Tough Questions on Range of Issues

High court pick Kavanaugh and his carefully constructed life

Kavanaugh has an "extensive" paper trail after decades of life in public service, including his work investigating former President Bill Clinton and his time in the second Bush, Reid said.

"Democrats have more than enough information to understand that this is a highly qualified jurist that should be the next Supreme Court justice", Wisconsin U.S. Senator Ron Johnson, a Republican, said in an interview on ABC's "This Week".

The Senate judiciary committee was notified of the decision to withhold documents on Friday.

Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, said late Monday that the Senate had been given an additional 42,000 pages of documents about Brett Kavanaugh, the night before confirmation hearings are due to start. "We're going to have a hearing and there's no drama in this hearing", he said.

The matter could be significant to Trump if the high court is called upon to render judgment on matters arising from special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing Russia-related investigation into the Trump administration and several civil lawsuits pending against Trump.

Kavanaugh's record of court opinions shows he is a conservative thinker opposed to abortion and supportive of corporations against government regulation.

Trump nominated Kavanaugh in June to succeed Justice Anthony Kennedy, who was the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States until he retired this year.

The eventual full Senate vote on Kavanaugh is expected to be close, with Republicans holding a narrow 50-49 majority with the death of Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona.

Kavanaugh's confirmation is complicated by the sheer number of emails that exist during his years in the White House.

A senior Senate Democratic aide said Democrats believe this would be the first time a sitting president exerted privilege under the records law to prevent disclosure of presidential documents to Congress, citing their conversations with National Archives officials.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican, said as long as Judge Kavanaugh doesn't bungle the hearings, he will be confirmed with some Democrats joining Republicans.

With attempts to attack Brett M. Kavanaugh's record failing, Democrats over the weekend mounted a last-ditch bid to derail his confirmation to the Supreme Court by claiming that the vetting process is so bad that it demands a do-over. It said that 440,500 documents were produced in relation to Kavanaugh, compared with 182,000 for Justice Neil Gorsuch, 173,000 for Justice Elena Kagan and just 6,350 for Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
