Cynthia Nixon-Andrew Cuomo debate

Cynthia Nixon and Andrew Cuomo

Cynthia Nixon is no stranger to the stage, but she's never before had a platform quite like this.

Former Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon is running for governor of NY on a progressive platform against longtime governor Andrew Cuomo.

Nixon, who is unlikely to have another chance to debate Cuomo before the September 13 primary, responded with scorn and bafflement.

The President slammed Cuomo on twitter writing "How does a politician, Cuomo, known for pushing people and businesses out of his state, not to mention having the highest taxes in the USA, survive making the statement, WE'RE NOT GOING TO MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, IT WAS NEVER THAT GREAT?"

The most recent polls have Cuomo ahead of Nixon, whose campaign has criticized the governor for only agreeing to a single debate. "His goal will be to make no news". Nixon has not run a single television ad, instead spending primarily on digital outreach and voter turnout efforts.

Nixon interrupted Cuomo's answers on several occasions, visibly irritating him. Nixon called him a political insider who has neglected to address issues such as corruption and New York City's crumbling subway system.

The shelves of a downtown Honolulu Walmart were stripped of items ranging from canned tuna to dog food. That meant it was likely to cause catastrophic damage with winds 157 miles per hour (252 kph) or above.

"You stood up to him about as well as he stands up to Putin", she said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"The MTA has been controlled by the state since 1965", Nixon snapped back.

In one of the more heated exchanges, he criticized Nixon's setting up of a corporation in order to file her income taxes, an arrangement she said was not unusual among actors and other freelance workers.

Nixon said New Yorkers should vote for her because she was a longtime champion of causes such as abortion access, better funding for schools and equal rights for gay and lesbian people. "I can get it done", he said.

"This time we were finally given the opportunity to debate but only by his rules, including no handshake", Nixon's spokesperson said.
