CDC studying measles outbreak in NC, other states

Measles outbreak hits more than 100 people in 21 states including Indiana

The CDC is keeping its eye on a measles outbreak that covers at least 21 states, including Indiana.

The CDC says a majority of those cases were diagnosed in people who were not vaccinated.

Last year, 118 people from 15 states were reported to have measles. the United States experienced a record number of cases in 2014 with 667 cases.

In Michigan, four cases have been reported this year.

Measles is a virus that spreads through the air and by coming into direct contact with someone who has it. Symptoms show up in 10 to 14 days after exposure.

Symptoms of the measles virus typically occur between seven and 14 days after infection. The total number of cases that year is the highest number since measles elimination was declared in the U.S. in 2000.

Some people may suffer more severe complications: ear infections, pneumonia and encephalitis (swelling of the brain which occasionally develops 5-10 years later), these unfortunately may result in prolonged hospitalization or even death. In all, 527 people at CRMC were at risk of contracting measles.

It causes fever, dry coughs, sore throats, and a skin rash.

While the state does require children that enroll in child care facilities and public schools to have their measles vaccination, but children can be exempted either for a medical or religious reason. Additionally, some doctors have never seen a case of measles in their lifetime.

What is the treatment for measles? Measles can be prevented with the MMR vaccine, which also protects against mumps and rubella. Two doses are about 97% effective.
