US Space Force: America to 'establish space dominance' by 2020

Mike Pence expected to announce plans for ‘Space Force’ in U.S. military

But President Donald Trump is leaving the heavy lifting to his supporters ― at least where the logo is concerned.

Pence announced the release of a Pentagon report on how to implement the president's vision. Most of the satellites are operated by the Air Force, which is likely to see a decrease in responsibilities after the proposed reorganization.

On Tuesday, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis called Pence "the point man" on issues pertaining to the USA military and space.

Pence discussed actions China and Russian Federation have taken to militarize the space domain, and how Space Force will meet those challenge.

Trump has called for a "separate but equal" space force, a complicated and expensive move that requires congressional approval. If Congress gives the green light to Space Force, the sixth branch of the military could officially be formed as early as 2020. "I don't have all the final answers yet", he said. "We're still putting it together".

Opinions on the Space Force in Congress have been divided. "Our adversaries already have transformed space into a war fighting domain and the United States will not shrink from this challenge".

The plan would increase the visibility of efforts to defend satellites from attack and other space-related tasks.

Meghan discreetly fastened her top button and left the event holding hands with Prince Harry , who was sporting a tailcoat. Meghan's half-sister, Samantha Markle , criticized the Duchess of Sussex over the weekend.

The military's role in space has been under scrutiny because the United States is increasingly reliant on orbiting satellites that are hard to protect. While the military operates a number of these, others are handled by civilian agencies like the NSA, as it was found to be advantageous to have multiple sources of intelligence. Namely, the Outer Space Treaty, to which the U.S. has been party since 1967, bans states from testing any weapons in outer space, or establishing military bases on the Moon and other celestial bodies. Senior Pentagon officials opposed the measure, and the plan was shelved.

A significant portion of Pence's speech was devoted to arguing that this is the right time for a space force.

The Defense Department has to "prepare for the next battlefield", said Pence.

Military officials are concerned about threats posed by China and Russian Federation in particular.

In 2007, China blew up a dead weather satellite with a missile, creating a massive debris cloud in orbit. Only Congress has the authority to establish a new branch of the military-something that hasn't happened since the U.S. Air Force was founded in 1947.

Last year, he said in a memo to Sen. "But we built that architecture in space at a time when it was benign".

Critics argue that Trump's Space Force would be stepping on the toes of the U.S. Air Force Space Command, which now oversees the nation's military operations in space.
