Trump declares victory for Republican in very tight OH special election

Tonight, the OH special election widely seen as a referendum on President Donald Trump reaches its conclusion.

Republican Troy Balderson led Democrat Danny O'Connor by about 1,700 votes with all precincts reporting, although the OH secretary of state's office said a final result would be delayed until more than 8,000 provisional and absentee ballots were counted.

"If you have a real blue wave - if you have the sort of wave, the late break that happened in 2006 where Democrats, from this point, they were ahead in the generic ballot, but they gained 6.6 percent between this point in 2006 and the Election Day - that will give the Democrats the Senate", he added.

Polls are now open for today's Kansas Democratic and Republican primaries.

The central OH race was the marquee contest on a day when four other states held nominating contests, including a battle for governor in MI in which a mainstream candidate beat a progressive and a high-profile conservative challenge to the incumbent Republican governor in Kansas. He also called out Trump's brand of smash mouth politics - a move that many see as an attempt to court independents and anti-Trump Republicans.

President Donald Trump's preferred congressional candidate - and his chief legislative achievement - are about to be tested in battleground OH in the season's final high-stakes special election. Ohio's 12th Congressional District, in the suburbs of Columbus, has had a Republican representative for 35 years, and has been largely in GOP hands since 1920.

With all precincts counted late on Tuesday night, U.S. time, Republican candidate Troy Balderson was approximately 1800 votes ahead, putting him on track for a victory of around one percentage point.

In Ohio, the script for the special election was somewhat familiar: An experienced Trump loyalist, Balderson, was fighting a strong challenge from O'Connor, a fresh-faced Democrat, in a congressional district held by the Republican Party for more than three decades. Pat Tiberi resigned to lead the Ohio Business Roundtable.

Voters on Tuesday are choosing would-be successors to Republican Gov. Rick Snyder, who can not run again due to term limits, and a GOP nominee to face third-term Democratic Sen. As of press time, there could still potentially be a recount, and provisional ballots are outstanding, but neither is expected to change the result.

O'Connor seemed to have the momentum in the run-up to Tuesday's election.

Hundreds evacuated in Virginia after dam overflows
Hundreds of people have been evacuated in Virginia after a National Weather Service (NWS ) warning sparked fears of a dam burst. Friday and the weather service warned residents in low-lying areas north of the dam to move to higher ground immediately.

"We're not stopping now", Democrat Danny O'Connor told cheering supporters.

Democrats are hoping to rally enough of their anti-Trump base to take control of the House and Senate this fall.

Kansas, Michigan, Missouri and Washington also held their regularly scheduled primaries on Tuesday, and the president endorsed candidates in several GOP races across those states.

The Democratic race for governor in MI tested the electoral power of the party's progressive wing.

Former state Sen. Gretchen Whitmer, who had support form Emily's List and Planned Parenthood, defeated Abdul El-Sayed, who had the backing of numerous liberal groups and campaigned with Mr. Sanders and Ms. Ocasio-Cortez.

"Congratulations to Bill Schuette".

On the Republican governor's ticket the top two contenders are Gov. Jeff Colyer and Secretary of State Kris Kobach.

This is a special election, not a primary, so the victor of Ohio's vote tonight will head to Congress after votes are counted.

Trump made his preference clear for Kobach.
