President Trump attorney Jay Sekulow on Sunday blamed "bad information" for erroneously denying that the president had a role in his campaign's response to a key June 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower.
He saidreports that he is concerned about the 2016 meeting his son had in Trump Tower are "fake news".
Trump launched today's battle by tweeting, "The Fake News hates me saying that they are the Enemy of the People only because they know it's TRUE".
Sunday's tweet was Trump's clearest statement yet on the goal of the meeting, which has become a focal point of Mueller's investigation even as the president and his lawyers try to downplay its significance and pummel the Mueller probe with attacks. While originally Trump, a Republican, said the meeting was about adoptions, on Sunday he said on Twitter that it was about getting information on his election opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton. But his claims publicly and to the Senate Judiciary Committee that he never told his father about the 2016 Trump Tower meeting with a Russian attorney promising dirt on Hillary Clinton have been contradicted by others in Trump's orbit.
Trump's admission that his son's 2016 Russian meeting was to get information on Clinton runs counter to the narrative he has previously pushed about the meeting.
The president called it "a complete fabrication" that he is "concerned about the meeting my wonderful son, Donald, had in Trump Tower".
Later White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders had said the president weighed in, but didn't dictate a statement released in July 2017 on the meeting, which said the get-together was focused on Russian adoptions.
He reiterated that he had no prior knowledge of the 20-minute meeting when it happened, adding that "it went nowhere".

As an analysis by the University of Kentucky Election Law Society clearly explains, under us law, "any contribution by a foreign national to the campaign of an American candidate for any election, state or national, is illegal", and any campaign of a candidate who accepts foreign aid is committing a crime.
"I was in the case, at that point, a couple of weeks", Sekulow said on ABC's "This Week".
"I had bad information at that time", the lawyer said. "We are fully confident of the accuracy and reliability of the information that has been provided by Donald Trump Jr.in the various investigations".
"It doesn't mean illegality, it doesn't mean criminality", he said.
Despite a show of force from his national security team this week as a warning against future Russian election meddling, Trump again deemed the matter a "hoax" this week.
