Venezuelan president attacked in drone explosion

State television showed him cutting short a speech as hundreds of soldiers broke ranks and scattered.

Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez said in a live broadcast that several drone-like devices with explosives detonated near the president.

Venezuela Information Minister says several drones loaded with explosives exploded close to where President Maduro was speaking.

Seconds later Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, looked up to the sky and winced after apparently hearing an unidentified sound.

Local media are reporting the explosion came from a nearby residential building.

The country's leader was addressing the military in Caracas to mark the 81st anniversary of the Bolivarian National Guard of Venezuela. A camera then shows soldiers running from in a square, before the footage cuts completely. The officer, Oscar Perez, was later killed in a deadly gun battle after over six months on the lam. "They failed and will continue to fail". The live television transmission was cut off without explanation. "We didn't have success today, but it's just a question of time", said the group, which says it was founded in 2014 to bring together all of Venezuela's "groups of resistance".
