Pep Guardiola sends message to new Chelsea FC boss Maurizio Sarri

Man City boss Pep Guardiola aims dig at Chelsea new boy Jorginho

Speaking in a news conference quoted by Sky Sports, Guardiola said: "First of all I'm happy that a manager of that level is in the Premier League".

Guardiola pledged to go for condition over quality as he looks to select a side capable of beating Chelsea and juggles the late return of many of his World Cup stars.

City's Catalan boss does have form in retaining trophies though, guiding Barcelona to three consecutive La Liga titles from 2009-2011 and then repeating the trick at Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga from 2014-16.

But in an intriguing insight into what drives him on, Guardiola, whose team face FA Cup winners Chelsea in the Community Shield on Sunday, has explained how it is the fear of losing, rather than the joy of winning, that motivates him.

The Napoli man was extremely close to joining Man City earlier this summer but a last minute change of heart meant he chose to follow Maurizio Sarri to the Bridge, and it is an issue which clearly still niggles Guardiola. "From my point of view, the players don't have to be anxious". I have never met one striker who fights like he fights.

My family comes before everything - Martial hits back at Mourinho
Mourinho also stated that he would not have paid to watch United's friendly matches in the United States were he a Red Devils fan. Spain produces great footballers and, unlike those further down the Premier League , teams outside La Liga's top six need money.

"The fear of losing games makes me starving and hungry again". I don't like the feeling to lose games. He doesn't have an English work permit yet so can't be signed up with the Premier League. "Every game shows you if you are on a good path".

"We tried in our short time together to review what we have done, analyse a little bit what Chelsea will be to try and see what we have to do, and play the final".

Where is Chelsea vs Manchester City Community Shield match played? "Nobody put a gun to his head and said, 'You have to'". Each person is always different than the other. "But in this moment of the season it's very important, the performance". The early signs are certainly positive and Guardiola will be hoping that the failure to sign a player he desperately wanted doesn't come back to haunt them, either on Sunday or in the long term. The team needed cover after Yaya Toure left and Pep said, of Douglas: "I think he has the potential to play with us". We want him. Txiki [Begiristain, City's director of football] spoke with him. He knows that, his agent knows that.

"We made it clear from the day I arrived we want him, but deals are deals, agents are agents and players are players".

And Lescott says Guardiola will never copy Mourinho's approach, claiming the City boss only knows how to play his way.
