Europe swelters in record heatwave

Euro scorcher: European heatwave could reach all time highs with temperatures expected to reach a sizzling 48C this weekend

Eight places in Portugal broke local temperature records, with the high peaking at 47 Celsius (116.6 Fahrenheit) in some places.

114 people were killed in two massive forest blazes past year in Portugal and civil services yesterday sent mobile text alerts warning the population of an extreme risk of fires in some regions, including around the capital Lisbon.

Sweden's Civil Contingencies Agency is warning of "a high risk" for wildfires in central and southern Sweden this weekend because of the dry and warm weather.

In Scandinavia, temperatures hit records until a few days ago.

Wildfires have also raged in some parts of Europe, the most devastating occurring across Greece killing more than 90 people, and Sweden has battled dozens of fires as far north as the Arctic Circle.

The probable maximum is set for Saturday, in the southern parts of Portugal and south-western parts of Spain.

A large plume of roasting hot air has set in motion another heatwave, not just in the United Kingdom, but across Europe, paving the way for warm weather through the rest of summer.

"Lisbon will be one of the hottest cities in the world this weekend because it's 10 in the morning right now and the weather is already way too hot", said Ana Pascoal, 56, a cleaner at a high-end restaurant.

Portugal and Spain endured scorching sunshine on a day which seriously threatened to break a 30-year European heat record.

With Europe facing a wide-ranging heatwave, some areas of Spain and Portugal are bracing for potentially record-breaking temperatures.

Love Island might be over, but it looks like we're still in for a long, hot summer.

Holidaymakers heading off to Spain and Portugal next week are being warned about a heatwave which will bring unbearable temperatures to parts of Europe.

"We're here for two days, so we're going for it", said David Jones from England, cooling off by the fountains with his wife.

Temperatures will push 30ºC in the South and it will remain dry, while the North and Scotland will be treated to the more balmy early 20s, with possible showers.

The global picture: The latest heat wave comes in the wake of the hottest-ever day on the Korean Peninsula, hottest July in Finland, the hottest-ever month at any location in the U.S.

Sweden and Poland have warned against swimming in the Baltic Sea due to a huge bloom of toxic algae caused by hot temperatures.
