Russian Military Police Announce Joint Patrol of Israeli-Syrian Border

UN peacekeepers return after 4 years to Israel-occupied Golan Heights near Syria

Last week, Israeli military forces targeted a Syrian Air Force fighter jet over the Golan Heights as it was flying in Syria's airspace and conducting a series of airstrikes against the positions of foreign-sponsored Takfiri militants in the occupied territories.

The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement that it was tracking the movement of the men toward the border fence with Israel on the Golan Heights on Wednesday evening.

This hope was that getting Iran's actual forces away from the Golan Heights would be enough to convince Israel to stop attacking Syrian military sites. They were believed to be fleeing the Syrian army of President Bashar Assad.

Isreali soldiers patrol the ceasefire line between Israel and Syria, as seen from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, July 26, 2018. "As to everything that is happening on the other side in Syria, from our view the situation is returning to how it was before the civil war, meaning there is a clear address, someone responsible and a central authority".

In Moscow, Rudskoy said Russia's military police would establish eight of its own monitoring posts at the edge of the United Nations disengagement zone at the frontier.

A series of blistering offensives backed by Moscow and Tehran has forced the rebels out of many of their strongholds, putting Assad's government back in control of almost two-thirds of the country. Assault rifles and explosive belts were retrieved from the scene by Israeli forces.

The incident took place in the southern part of the Golan Heights, where a demilitarized buffer zone was established between Israel and Syria.

Israel kills seven militants amid tensions on Syria's border

There was no immediate Syrian government response to the border clashes reported by Jordan and Syria on Thursday.

A Syrian offensive in the country's south has resulted in IS-affiliated groups scattering in the area, Conricus said.

"It is also in Assad's interest, because he understands what will happen" if he does not keep the border quiet, the Jerusalem Post newspaper quoted Liberman as saying.

He said Israeli forces believed they were "on a terrorist mission" and "trying to infiltrate into Israel".

The Syrian conflict erupted in 2011 and Russian intervention in 2015 helped to turn the tide in Assad's favour.

"As the situation stabilizes, these posts will be handed over to Syrian government forces", Rudskoy told reporters.

Lieberman reiterated Israel's demand that Iran not set up military bases against it in Syria, nor that Syria be used to smuggle arms to Hezbollah guerrillas in neighboring Lebanon.
