John Kelly says he accepted Trump's request to stay on through 2020

Donald Trump John Kelly

A White House official told the paper that the retired four-star Marine general, who previous year told reporters that "it is not the best job I ever had", agreed to Trump's request. According to three Trump associates and two White House officials, the shortlist now includes Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin as well as Freedom Caucus Chairman Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C.

Kelly has seen his status as chief of staff diminished in recent months, with the President circumventing numerous policies and protocols the retired Marine Corps general put in place when he entered the West Wing a year ago.

Kelly began as chief of staff in late July a year ago, taking over for Reince Priebus.

The retired Marine Corps general was Homeland Security secretary before being asked to succeed Reince Priebus, who resigned from his post.

Photos show NK building new ICBM near Pyongyang
North Korea has carried out a total of six nuclear tests, the most recent of which took place in September past year . He declined to say whether Pyongyang is building new missiles. "Things don't change overnight", Conway later added.

Kelly's allies have said he took the job out of a sense of duty and he has not exactly hidden his simmering dissatisfaction. In April, Kelly denied reports that he called Trump an "idiot" and mocked his lack of policy knowledge. Trump on Monday tweeted congratulations to Kelly on reaching the one-year milestone.

The two strong-willed men clashed repeatedly, with semi-frequent Oval Office shouting matches and speculation that Kelly could quit. But in recent weeks Trump signaled a willingness to retain Kelly in the job, believing that he could simply overrule the chief of staff with little cost.

If Kelly stays on into 2019, he'll occupy the role during a re-election cycle, which is likely to downsize what already is a weakened role for him.

A senior administration official confirmed Kelly's announcement, first reported by The Wall Street Journal. It's a one-man show and no one is getting in the way of Trump's delusion that he's nailing it on a daily basis. The White House has struggle to recruit top talent across the administration to replace departing staffers. But he added: "Look, at some point, things happen but I will tell you. we have a very good relationship".
