Zimbabwe Election: Ruling ZANU-PF Leading with Majority Parliamentary Seats

Violence breaks out in Zimbabwe as Mugabe’s choice for president cries foul

At least one person was killed in Zimbabwe's capital Harare on Wednesday as soldiers stepped in to disperse stone-throwing opposition supporters who accused the ruling party of trying to rig Monday's presidential election, witnesses said. Provided he also emerges the victor of the presidential race, Mr Mnangagwa will have to take on the onerous task of placing Zimbabwe on an even keel after the corruption and diplomatic isolation that marked the 37 years of the Mugabe regime, while also engaging the opposition to ensure that there is no confrontation that blocks developmental works.

Supporters of Zimbabwe's MDC party demonstrate outside ZANU PF headquarters in Harare on August 1, 2018, as protests erupted over alleged fraud in the country's election.

Presidential results have not yet been announced but state media say they are expected within two hours. "Today we saw the deployment of military tanks and firing of live ammunition on civilians for no apparent reason".

"It's a clear attempt by ZEC to subvert the will of the people".

Al Jazeera's Haru Mutasa reports from Harare.

"While we appreciate that the electoral environment was relatively peaceful and a huge turnout at polling stations, we reiterate that electoral processes must always reflect and uphold the true will of the citizens", the coalition said on Wednesday. We know what's happening here.

ZEC is yet to announce official election results, having announced only 7 constituencies thus far.

US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert has also called the detention "unjust", adding, "Turkey knows our position well". Brunson was held for almost two years in prison on terror-related charges before he was moved last week to house arrest .

The possibility of confrontation is an unnerving reminder of the tensions that pervade this southern African nation, debilitated by Mugabe's long rule. Waves of bloodshed have roiled previous general elections, as Mugabe's government cracked down on his increasingly restive people.

Even before the violence, European Union observers questioned the conduct of the presidential and parliamentary vote, the first since Mugabe's forced resignation after almost 40 years in charge of the southern African nation. And authorities welcomed it as such, as well, inviting global election monitors to observe the elections for the first time in about 16 years.

The observers also flagged a misuse of state resources, including food aid, instances of intimidation and bias among traditional leaders and state media, which it said were all used to sway the election in favor of the ruling party.

But he also criticized the election commission's "lack of transparency", and "some problems around polling stations" on voting day. "They are stealing our election".

Its representative, Angola's Foreign Minister, Manuel Domingos Augusto, called the poll "a political watershed in Zimbabwe's history" that would lead to "consolidation of democracy". The ZRP also "warned political leaders who have incited their followers into committing acts of violence that the long arm of the law will certainly catch up with them".

His opponent Chamisa, however, was not prepared to wait on the release of official results, which he has already derided as fake. "This situation in town, you must remember it was fomented by none other than Nelson Chamisa because during his campaign trail he said if he loses elections, he will make sure that this country is ungovernable".

The unrest started soon after Nelson Chamisa, leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), declared that he had won the popular vote.
