Rescuers attempt to reach 'hundreds' stranded on Indonesia's Lombok: Disaster agency

The Indonesian island of Lombok was struck by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake

A 6.4-magnitude natural disaster hit the island of Lombok in Indonesia on Sunday, killing at least 14 people in the popular vacation destination and sending residents fleeing from collapsing buildings at dawn.

An estimated 689 people remain trapped on the mountain, according to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the national disaster mitigation agency.

The number of casualties could increase as data were still being collected from other locations on the island, he said.

The 30-year-old victim was inside a restroom when the entire building collapsed and crushed her, the New Straits Times quoted another Malaysian climber, Khairul Azim, as saying.

"Providing food and medicine to them as soon as possible is now our priority", said Sudiyono, who uses one name.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo flew to the island Monday to meet with the communities affected by the quake as emergency aid began to be dispersed to the island.

Some 200 people from 35 families whose house were damaged or destroyed had pitched tents there.

Video footage showed ambulances lining the streets of Lombok and many houses damaged with only parts of brick walls standing.

Russian Federation also hasn't backed off its support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, said Portman. Until this week, the officials said, Trump's senior aides have resisted carrying out his directives.

The jolt was felt about 100km away on the island of Bali, although there were no immediate reports of damage there.

Mr Pramuja said a landslide triggered by Sunday's quake trapped a group of six at the crater lake of Indonesia's second-highest volcano.

The quake damaged dozens of single-story houses and taller buildings and was felt in a wider area, including in Bali, where no damage or casualties were reported.

.

The depth of the quake was about 7 km as per the US Geological Survey.

No tsunami alert has been issued.

At the Katamaran Hotel & Resort in Senggigi beach, some 30 guests gathered in the hotel lobby for around half an hour before venturing back to their rooms. "Everything is back to normal now", receptionist Ni Nyoman Suwarningsih told AFP.

It is frequently hit by quakes, a lot of them harmless.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because it lies on the Ring of Fire - the line of frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions that circles virtually the entire Pacific rim. In 2004, a 9.1-magnitude natural disaster near Sumatra prompted a tsunami and led to more than 230,000 deaths.
