Special drug dog worries Colombian cartel

Sombra a drug-sniffing dog who works with Colombia's police was relocated after a criminal organization put a price on her head

One particular member of the Colombian National Police has put so much fear into the hearts of drug smugglers that they have reportedly offered up to $70 thousand to anyone who can poison her food or water.

Like most dogs, Sombra likes to play, and enjoys being scratched and petted, but at the same time, she is an essential instrument in the struggle against criminal forces which endanger the lives of Colombia's inhabitants on a daily basis.

The biggest and most brutal drug cartel in Colombia has placed a $70,000 hit on the head of a German shepherd named Sombra, a drug-sniffing K9 with an unusually sensitive nose.

"Her sense of smell is far beyond that of other dogs", said officer José Rojas, Sombra's 25-year-old handler.

The illegal drugs belonged to the powerful Urabeños, also called the Gulf clan, run by Dairo Antonio Úsuga also known as Otoniel.

It comes as no surprise to Colombian police, who say Sombra, meaning "Shadow" in English, has led to the seizure of nine tonnes of cocaine and the arrest of 245 suspects, many of whom are linked to Urabenos. Police have moved Sombra to ensure her safety.

Sombra the drug-sniffing police dog is famous in Colombia.

The leader of the Gulf Clan has offered $7,000 to the first person to capture or kill Sombra, after the skilled drug-sniffing dog has cost him over 2,000 kilos of cocaine.

President-elect Ivan Duque promised a tougher approach on coca production during his election campaign, with strategies including aerial spraying and drones. However, she is not totally safe just yet and for this reason, two armed guards transport her, backwards and forwards from her drug-sniffing shift in the airport in a van with tinted windows.

The national police in Colombia told local news outlets that at least 1,800 officers have died over the last 20 years and a number of dogs have also been lost in the war against drugs.
