Facebook plans to enter China by setting up local subsidiary

Facebook has secured a licence to set up a subsidiary in China, which will serve as an "innovation hub" to support local tech talent.

Facebook has similar hubs in other countries including India, France and Brazil. The filing, which is no longer accessible, noted that the company is owned by Facebook Hong Kong Ltd.

Known for being the headquarters of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba and many other tech groups, the capital of Zhejiang, Hangzhou will be the center of Facebook's new hub. The news came shortly after Google doodled its way further back into mainland China, where its search and mail operations have also been blocked for nearly a decade.

Having a wholly foreign-owned enterprise in China does not change Facebook's approach in the country, the company said, adding that it was still learning different approaches on what it takes to be in China.

China has withdrawn its approval for Facebook Inc's (FB.O) plan to open a venture in the eastern province of Zhejiang, the New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing a person familiar with the matter.

Over the past 10 years, founder Mark Zuckerberg and a number of executives have not given up on China, with Zuckerberg paying visits to China to meet officials and visit Chinese universities.

Zoo accused of passing off donkey as zebra
However, BBC reports that when contacted by a local radio station, the zoo's director insisted that the animal was not a fake . Mahmoud Sarhan posted photos of the animal to Facebook after a recent trip to Cairo's International Garden municipal park.

Despite the efforts, Zuckerberg has been unable to get Facebook unblocked in China.

The world's largest social network has lost its ability top operate an innovation hub in China just a day after it was allowed to do so. The US firm is stepping up to break into the Chinese market despite its social media platforms remaining blocked.

Facebook has unsuccessfully attempted for years to open an office in mainland China. Yet the information on his company's Hangzhou-based subsidiary emerged just as he was playing "the China card" to fend off any potential break-up of his empire.

Despite not having any product or office in China, Facebook still does booming business there.

Besides this, Facebook earns huge revenue from China even without any physical presence in the nation before now.

He has attempted to cosy up to Beijing politicians as well, reportedly asking Chinese President Xi Jinping to provide a Chinese name for his daughter.
