White House defends decision to bar reporter from press event

Shep Smith responds to White House version of ‘disinvite’ of CNN reporter

From reportedly raging that CNN was on the first lady's television set, to refusing to take questions from the network, to the White House barring one of its reporters from a press event: the Trump-CNN relationship is toxic.

The White House Correspondents' Association strongly condemned Collins's exclusion from Trump's appearance in the Rose Garden as "inappropriate, wrong-headed, and weak".

"For those of you at home, if I may, journalists are not the enemies of the people", Smith said.

"It had nothing to do with the content of the question", Mr. Gidley told reporters aboard Air Force One as President Donald Trump headed back to Washington from Iowa and IL.

During the Oval Office event, in which the president also met with Juncker, Collins sought to question Trump about the release of an audiotape involving then-candidate Trump and his attorney Michael Cohen in October 2016.

In a video clip from the meeting, Collins can be heard asking the President, "Did Michael Cohen betray you?", "Do you worry about what Michael Cohen is going to say to prosecutors?", "Are you anxious about what is on the other tapes?", and "Why has Vladimir Putin not accepted your invitation?".

Mr. Gidley said Ms. Collins "was told repeatedly to leave the Oval Office". Journalists sometimes ignore the shouts of White House aides in such settings if it seems like the president might answer a question.

12 audio files sent to prosecutors in Michael Cohen probe
Trump or his attorneys come forward today, right now and claim there are no other tapes?" The tabloid never published the story. The tape details payments made to porn stars that President Tump had affairs with months before the 2016 presidential election.

Smith aired footage of Shine telling reporters to ask the CNN reporter, Kaitlan Collins, if he ever used the word "ban" in telling her she could not attend the event.

Numerous reporters, including many from the European Union delegation, had been shouting questions, and, as usual, it took some time for the pack of journalists to file out the doors.

Donald Trump has been at frequent loggerheads with CNN since taking office, but their feud has become increasingly bitter as the channel's acerbic White House coverage fuels a boom in viewers. "To be clear, we support a free press and ask that everyone be respectful of the presidency and guests at the White House", she said.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders points to a reporter for a question during a press briefing at the White House, Monday, July 2, 2018, in Washington. "She also asked Trump if he is anxious about what might be on any other tapes recorded by Cohen, and why Russian President Vladimir Putin had not yet accepted Trump's invitation to come to Washington".

CNN, in a statement, objected to the move, calling it "retaliatory in nature" and "not indicative of an open and free press".

White House deputy chief of staff for communications Bill Shine challenged reporters on Thursday about whether the administration had ever used the word "ban".
