Francesco Molinari wins British Open as Tiger Woods has impressive rally

Jordan Spieth at Carnoustie

Francesco Molinari played a steady hand amid the cheers for Tiger Woods and another insane ending at Carnoustie to win the British Open and become Italy's first major champion. For Jordan Spieth not to make a birdie in a round is hard to believe.

Schauffele remained on course at seven under but he bogeyed at the 17th to put Molinari's lead to two.

Spieth was at 9-under 204.

Molinari collected more than £1.4m for winning his first major here and moved to world No 6 as he left the likes of Rory Mcilroy, Justin Rose, Jordan Spieth and, most pertinently, Tiger Woods in his wake.

Three-time champion Tiger Woods proved he's still got what it takes as he rolled back the years on Saturday, roaring into contention at the British Open with a sizzling third-round 66 at Carnoustie. He laid up, pitched to three feet, and made a par. One of those was three weeks ago at the Quicken Loans National when he shot 62 in the final round and Woods, the tournament host, presented him the trophy.

And the fact remains it's been 10 years since he last won a major championship, no matter how much he still excites a crowd.

Thirteen more majors followed over the next 11 years as the American looked on course to break Jack Nicklaus' tally of 18 major victories - a record that has stood since 1986. Unfortunately, I hit a bad 3 iron off the tee there at 10.

Woods flinched when it mattered most, the nerves of a 42-year-old on display for all to see. "I'm not making excuses for myself by any means because all I had to do is shoot even par today, and I could certainly do that out here". Playing with Tiger was another challenge.

"The way Francesco played today was attractive", said Woods, a 14-time major victor, of the new champion. He hit a flighted wedge that ran out to six feet but missed the birdie effort on the low side. But while they were all over par on the front nine, he made birdie on No. 4 and then added another on the par-5 sixth.

Asian shares drift lower as China data, trade cast shadows
Whoever says we are foes is spreading fake news", Tusk tweeted late Sunday from Beijing, without naming Trump directly. Last year, America's total trade in goods with China topped $635 billion, according to the U.S.

On Sunday afternoon, needing a shot to set a clubhouse target, he was cursing it again.

Scoring conditions were ideal on a warm day with little wind and greens softened by rain the day before.

Tiger's double bogey at the 11th halted the juggernaut and he slipped back to five under and was never able to recover as a log-jam of SIX players tied for the lead.

Bryan took to Twitter during Sunday's final round to share his recollection of Molinari's plan, which the now-Open champion explained while the two were playing together at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in China back in October.

Zach Johnson and Kevin Kisner shared the overnight lead at 6-under par.

Best of the rest: Eddie Pepperell admitted that he was "a little hungover" after a disappointing third-round performance, but he shook off the cobwebs in stunning fashion, shooting a 4-under 67 to rocket up the leaderboard.

The round ties the low at Carnoustie shot in the final round in 2007 by Steve Stricker and Richard Green. He is even par for the tournament.

Woods then found himself in the lead in the middle of his round as the leaders shed shots all over the place but from that tantalising high his game began to falter visiting the sand on three successive holes from the eighth to the tenth.

It was his first Open since missing the cut at St. Andrews in 2015. All day long they had heard the cheers rolling across the links of Carnoustie and, finally, he was here.
