Trump rips Fed again for hiking interest rates

On July 20, Trump said that he thought the Federal Reserve raising interest rates undermined the economy.

The dollar fell across the board on Friday, as the latest comments by U.S. President Donald Trump complaining about the strength of the greenback and the rise in U.S. interest rates squashed a rally that took it to a one-year high the previous session.

"I'm doing this to do this right thing for our country, we have been ripped off by China for a long time and I told that to President Xi", explained President Trump.

Trump said the U.S. had been being taken advantage of by China for a long time. Currently, the Trump administration has only put tariffs on $34 billion worth of Chinese products.

A second tranche of US$16 billion (RM65 billion) in products is under review and could soon be added to the U.S. measures.

In an apparent reference to Fed rate increases, Trump tweeted: "Tightening now hurts all that we have done". It has already slapped additional taxes on U.S. soy beans and pork exports - a move created to target Trump's rural voter base.

Along with pressing Chinese leaders to shrink the deficit, Trump's administration has accused China of engaging in unfair trade practices by forcing American investors to turn over technologies to Chinese firms. "I want them to do well".

Speaking about Fed policy in his interview with CNBC, Trump said he is "letting them do what they feel is best".

TIME Magazine morphs Trump, Putin's faces on cover for 'Summit Crisis' story
He has made contradictory statements over whether he believes Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 US election. But don't expect President Vladimir Putin to say that out loud.

'So somebody would say, 'Oh, maybe you shouldn't say that as president.' I couldn't care less what they say because my views haven't changed, ' he told CNBC.

St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank President James Bullard said on Friday the Federal Reserve would remain unaffected by Trump's comments on U.S. monetary policy.

Last month, the Fed raised its benchmark rate for a second time this year and projected two more increases in 2018.

Trump's comments will make life hard for both the Treasury and the Fed, said Tony Fratto, former White House deputy press secretary under George W. Bush and founder of Hamilton Place Strategies in Washington.

YUAN DECLINES: The People's Bank of China set the Chinese currency's central parity rate to 0.9 percent weaker against the dollar on Friday.

Trump reiterated threats to impose tariffs on almost all Chinese imports to the United States in a CNBC interview broadcasted on Friday. Instead, the Chinese currency weakened and was expected to extend its steady decline, providing Beijing with a buffer against punitive United States trade tariffs. The government does, however, enjoy more influence over the value of its currency than the United States does.

Trump has ordered Commerce to investigate whether auto imports pose a threat to US national security that would justify tariffs or other trade restrictions. However, such a maneuver risks reigniting an outflow of capital that Beijing has spent months trying to halt.
