In a press release accompanying the news, Nadella said: "We had an incredible year, surpassing $100 billion in revenue as a result of our teams' relentless focus on customer success and the trust customers are placing in Microsoft [.] Our early investments in the intelligent cloud and intelligent edge are paying off, and we will continue to expand our reach in large and growing markets with differentiated innovation". Intelligent Cloud's operating margins.

According to a ZDNet report, the biggest contributor to the milestone in income generation was Microsoft's cloud service, which includes Azure, Office 365 and Dynamics 365. Azure is gaining traction and is now sitting at 16% overall cloud market share versus Amazon Web Services which has around 32% based on recent market data.

"We're investing aggressively to build Azure as the world's computer", Nadella said, referring to Microsoft's cloud computing platform that competes with services run by Amazon and Google.

As Deutsche Bank analyst Karl Keirstead said in a research note, "That magnitude of acceleration at Microsoft's scale speaks to strong execution and cloud traction as well as a very healthy overall corporate IT spending backdrop".
