A 71-year-old man in Florida died on July 10 after being infected by bacteria that can cause serious gastrointestinal illness and rarely flesh-eating disease (necrotizing fasciitis) from eating a contaminated raw oyster, according to local news reports.

Though sometimes labeled a "flesh-eating" bacteria, Vibrio vulnificus can not attack healthy skin, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

The Florida Department of Health reports that in 2017 there have been 49 cases of Vibrio Vulnificus and caused 11 deaths in Florida.

Florida Department of Health Sarasota County Steve Huard says that the man got Vibrio vulnificus from eating the oyster.

The department did not release the name of the restaurant where the man ate the tainted shellfish.

State health officials tell 10News he ate the oyster on July 8 and was pronounced dead 48 hours later.

Health officials are investigating and working with the restaurant to collect as much information as possible, they said.

Chelsea: Hazard, Courtois futures in board’s hands, says new coach
Zola told the club's official website: "For me it is an wonderful thing". "This is a post-World Cup time", said Sarri. Chelsea's pre-season training began under Sarri's predecessor, Antonio Conte .

Vibrio is a strain of bacteria found in oysters and other seafood.

"Often with flesh-eating bacteria infected from may to October when the water is warmer". Vibrio Vulnificus can't be seen, smelled, or even taste it.

He also said some people use the trick of only eating raw seafood during the months that end with "R".

The bacteria, officially called vibrio vulnificus, is rare and naturally occurring in warm, brackish seawater, according to the Florida Department of Health.

While Vibrio vulnificus doesn't actually consume the flesh, as previously reported by the Inquisitr, it does however produce severe symptoms that can be life-threatening in 50 percent of cases - particularly in people with weakened immune systems, such as patients who suffer from chronic liver disease or kidney disease.

When it comes to eating raw or undercooked oysters, there is no way to know which ones contain the bacteria because oysters contaminated with Vibrio don't look, taste or smell any different than a healthy oyster, the CDC says. Drennon warned: "We tell everybody regardless of age or immune status that they should avoid eating raw or undercooked shell fish or seafood or avoid being in the saltwater when they have an open wound or lesion on their body". Nonetheless, it said that this is the first confirmed case and death of Vibrio vulnificus in Sarasota County this year.
