For Republicans, Russian sabotage of our elections is no big deal

AFP | US President Donald Trump and Russia's President Vladimir Putin shake hands at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki

Appearing side-by-side at a news conference after their much-anticipated two-hour summit in Helsinki on Monday, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin both cast doubt on what virtually all US intelligence agencies have agreed upon - that Russia meddled in the 2016 election.

Despite the 12 reason indictments, Trump deflected admissions of the Kremlin's involvement in the 2016 election, saying "I don't see any reason" to believe Russian Federation was connected to hacking of the DNC server.

House Speaker Paul Ryan delivered a strongly worded statement, saying there's "no question" that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 presidential election, and noting that USA intelligence agencies and a House panel agreed.

At the joint appearance in Finland with Putin, Trump repeated the Russian leader's denials about involvement in the election.

The summit began just hours after Trump blamed the United States - and not Russian election meddling or its annexation of Crimea - for a low-point in U.S. -Russia relations.

At a time when the world really needed Mr Trump, as the leader of the free world, to stand up to his controversial counterpart, he couldn't say one critical word about Russian Federation on any of the issues that have brought relations between Washington and Moscow to a post-Cold War low. Not only were Trump's comments imbecilic, he is wholly in the pocket of Putin.

Trump suggested the United States and Russian Federation were to blame for troubled relations between the two countries.

"We both spoke with Bibi (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu) and they would like to do certain things with Syria having to do with the safety of Israel", Trump told a joint news conference.

Key members of the US Congress, including some Republicans, criticised Trump's performance at the press conference.

"This answer by President Trump will be seen by Russian Federation as a sign of weakness and create far more problems than it solves", Graham said in a tweet.

Tension created by earlier comments from President Trump stating that Germany was being "held captive" by Russian Federation over oil seemed to die down, with Trump calling Putin a "good competitor" to have.

And then Trump chimed in, "If they had it, it would have been out long ago", finishing the press conference. Cuomo said one thing he knows for sure is that "you've got Republicans, you've got Democrats, and right now, they're on the same page, and if they move together, they will wind up in a better place".

"I beat Hillary Clinton easily and frankly we beat her..."

Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer said Mr Trump's approach in Helsinki was unprecedented for a leader of the United States. "But I really do want to see the server".

Mr Putin said he and Mr Trump have maintained regular contact through phone calls and meetings at global events, but "the time has come to have a thorough discussion on various worldwide problems and sensitive issues".

The Russian president spoke first, hailing the talks "rather useful and successful" in addressing issues they discussed, including nuclear weapons and alleged Russian meddling in the U.S. election.

"I did not think this was a good moment for our country", Corker said.

After Trump concluded his remarks, American reporters shouted several questions about whether he would bring up election meddling during his discussions with Putin.
