Trump to announce pick for Supreme Court

Same sex marriage and abortion rights will likely come under review with the next justice

The appointee would replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, 81, who announced last month that he will retire this summer. Trump signed Kavanaugh's nomination papers Monday evening in the White House residence.

Sources have told NPR that those four finalists are all USA appeals court judges; Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett, Raymond Kethledge and Thomas Hardiman.

Relishing the guessing game beyond the White House gates, Trump had little to say about his choice before the announcement.

Some conservatives have expressed concerns about Kavanaugh - a longtime judge and former clerk for Justice Kennedy - questioning his commitment to social issues like abortion and noting his time serving under President George W. Bush as evidence he is a more establishment choice. But his supporters have cited his experience and wide range of legal opinions.

Trump has often clashed with Republican leadership, even publicly, and his decision to nominate Kavanaugh could stir up problems between him and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Once Trump names his nominee, all eyes will shift to a handful of moderate Democratic and Republican senators.

Republican Senator John McCain, key to a Republican "yes" vote, endorsed the new nominee. For lawmakers who are not on the Judiciary Committee, it may be their only chance to talk with the nominee personally before a final vote. Trump says his list of potential judges was compiled by highly respected conservatives and Republican Party leadership. Barrett is a former University of Notre Dame law professor, (and a graduate of the school; Kavanaugh meanwhile received his undergrad and law degrees from Yale). Anti-choice right-wingers have also noted that he appears less likely than other top contenders to drastically curtail abortion rights.

Liberals also fear that a new conservative justice will help overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, which protects a woman's right to an abortion. Another former Kennedy clerk, Kethledge is known for his strong defense of the Second Amendment. Kennedy provided a decisive vote in 2015 on an important fair housing case.

That means Kavanaugh is not a stranger to tough confirmation fights.

Departing his New Jersey golf club on Sunday afternoon, Trump told reporters he was still making up his mind. If confirmed by the Senate. He now works for the Washington-based lobbying firm Covington & Burling.

Trump is hoping to replicate his successful nomination of Justice Neil Gorsuch past year.

The president has spent the days leading up to the decision mulling the pros and cons of the various options with aides and allies.

Indiana's Donnelly and Democratic Sens. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Donnelly of IN and Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

That increases the focus on two Republicans - Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.), who opposes abortion, announced on Monday he can not support a process that involved Trump's picking from a list of 25 candidates selected by conservatives and big business. He called it the "fruit of a corrupt process straight from the D.C. swamp".

The nominee needs approval from a simple majority in the Senate to be confirmed.

He tweeted later Sunday that he was looking forward to the announcement and said an 'exceptional person will be chosen!' "Over the coming weeks I will review his judicial record while also ensuring that Judge Kavanaugh will approach each case on its merits and follow the law as it is written". Trump said, after announcing his decision.

Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet similarly released a statement regarding the selection. "She has made clear - as she said to the President in person two weeks ago - that she considers fully vetting Supreme Court nominees one of the most important jobs of any USA senator, and she plans to fulfill that critical duty".

Hardiman, 52, attended Georgetown Law.

Barrett - a longtime Notre Dame Law School professor who became a federal judge last fall - excited social conservatives since she was questioned about her Roman Catholic faith in her nomination hearings previous year, but her brief time on the bench has raised questions about her experience.
