His appointment means that all four of the U.K.'s so-called great offices of state - Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary - are held by politicians who voted "Remain" in the 2016 referendum.

Other MPs in the region backed Mrs May following the resignations of Brexit Secretary David Davis, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and MP Chris Green.

Theresa May addressed the 1922 Committee in Westminster on Monday evening, raising the prospect of a Jeremy Corbyn-led government to appeal for Tory unity on Brexit.

"This afternoon, the Prime Minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary".

He says the Brexit "dream is dying, suffocated by needless self-doubt", and that Britain is "headed to the status of a colony", having to swallow European Union writ without "any ability to influence these laws as they are made". After Johnson's departure she said she was "sorry and a little surprised" at his decision after ministers appeared to back her proposals.

Speaking on LBC radio, he said: "I had resigned because this was central to my job and if we continue with this policy and I was still there, I'd have to present it in the House of Commons".

El Pais says "differences over Brexit break the British government".

Attorney General Jeremy Wright, meanwhile, will be taking up the post of Culture Secretary.

The Prime Minister enduring a bruising battle today as the two Cabinet heavyweights resigned over Brexit.

Former Shropshire Council leader Keith Barrow has threatened to leave the party if Mrs May does not step down, adding: "I think she absolutely has to go".

She said she and the two departed ministers "do not agree about the best way of delivering our shared commitment to honoring the result of the referendum" in which United Kingdom voters opted to leave the EU.

Dominic Raab, the former minister of state for housing and planning, was named the new Brexit secretary.

"Huge honour to be appointed Foreign Secretary at this critical moment in our country's history", he said in a tweet after his appointment.

He has always supported a so-called "hard Brexit", which supports relinquishing access to the bloc's single market in exchange for full border control.

"What I want to say to them is Britain is going to be a dependable ally, a country that stands up for the values that matter to the people of this country, and will be a strong confident voice in the world". "Mr Speaker, this is the right Brexit", she said to jeers from the opposition Labour Party.
