Beryl Becomes 'Very Tiny' First Hurricane Of Atlantic Season

Hurricane Beryl could hit parts of the Caribbean

Hurricane Beryl has strengthened quickly to become the first hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season, though it's due to weaken before making landfall overnight Sunday in the Caribbean.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says, however that a tropical storm watch remains in effect for Dominica.

However, the storm is forecast to weaken gradually, eventually becoming a trough of low pressure Monday as it moves across the Caribbean Sea.

- The first hurricane of the 2018 season formed Friday, but it's not expected to hold its strength for too long. meanwhile, a new depression has formed off the USA coast.

It is barely moving with no significant motion expected in the next day. Maximum sustained winds have reached 45 miles per hour (75 kph).

Beryl was a compact storm, with hurricane force winds extending out about 10 miles (20 kilometres) from its centre.

A tropical storm warning remained in effect for Dominica and Guadeloupe, while a tropical storm watch was issued for Barbados, St. Lucia, Martinique, St. Martin, and St. Barthelemy, Saba and St. Eustatius and St. Maarten.

Newly formed Hurricane Beryl is on a path that should carry it over the Lesser Antilles at the end of the weekend and into the eastern Caribbean, bringing a new threat to islands still rebuilding from last year's storms. The government of Dominica said it would shut down its water system and Puerto Rico's governor warned of likely new power outages.

Though the storm is far from the strength of major Hurricanes Maria and Irma previous year, Beryl still poses a threat of wind and rain to areas that have not fully recovered from those destructive storms. National Weather Service meteorologist Carlos Anselmi told the AP that 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 centimeters) of rain was expected across Puerto Rico, with double that in isolated areas.

As Tropical Storm Beryl approaches, Puerto Ricans are preparing by stocking up on food and supplies, leaving long lines at stores.

A new tropical depression has culminated in the Atlantic Ocean, just offshore of the Carolina Coast, and could become a hurricane as it develops.

The governor urged people without sturdy roofs to stay in one of the 424 shelters that the government planned to open across the island. It was moving north-northwest at 5 miles per hour (8 kph).
