North Korea Calls U.S. Diplomatic Posture ‘Regrettable’

US North Korea To Form Working Groups On Denuclearization

Following the highly anticipated June 12 summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un, the US President wrote on Twitter that "there is no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea".

"People are going to make stray comments after meetings".

"I would like to pay my tribute to the strong leadership you have demonstrated in negotiating with North Korea", Abe told Pompeo.

The secretary of state also said that despite a critical statement released by North Korea's Foreign Ministry on Saturday night, he thought the two sides had made progress during the meeting and that his North Korean counterpart, Kim Yong Chol, negotiated in "good faith" during the meeting. North Korean officials have yet to demonstrate that in working-level talks, the intelligence officials said. "The road ahead will be hard and challenging and we know that critics will try to minimise the work that we've achieved".

And though Pompeo said there's still more work to be done, . he was confident that North Korea and its leader Kim Jong-un are still equally committed in achieving denuclearization. "But Washington should not allow nuclear talks to be held hostage to peace talks or else there could be peace with a nuclear-armed North Korea indefinitely".

The Trump administration has said it would take between 1 and 2 1/2 years to dismantle North Korea's nuclear program.

"It's a broad definition", Pompeo said.

"While we are encouraged by the progress of these talks, progress alone does not justify the relaxation of the existing sanctions regime".

"The commitment that Chairman Kim made is important and powerful, and I am convinced that he understands the commitment he made, and I am hopeful that we will find a path forward to achieve that commitment that Chairman Kim himself made personally to President Trump and then to [the] world in the signed agreement between our two leaders", Pompeo added. "This really shows the unwavering bond of the Japan-U.S. alliance".

Wildfire sweeps across northern Bay Area, claiming more than 44,000 acres
Stragglers trying to enjoy the area, despite an evacuation order, were driven out by the smoke and CalFire's admonishments to leave.

There was no immediate explanation of what needed to be clarified, but the two sides have been struggling to specify what exactly "denuclearization" would entail and how it could be verified to the satisfaction of the United States. And, the promised remains have yet to be delivered.

"I think there is a fundamental misunderstanding", said CNN global affairs analyst Joseph Yun, a former top United States diplomat on North Korea policy.

The statement said that Pyongyang had expected the US side to offer constructive measures that would help build trust based on the spirit of their leaders' summit last month and that the North was also thinking about providing reciprocal measures. "But expectation and hope of ours were so naive as to be foolish", read the statement. It said the US side had shown little interest, giving "certain conditions and excuses".

But, briefing reporters before flying on to Tokyo, he offered few new details as to how North Korea would honour its commitment to "denuclearise" in exchange for USA security guarantees.

Nauert said Pompeo's discussions with North Korean officials also included repatriation of American Korean War remains.

Pompeo has bristled at the idea that the Singapore declaration was an empty promise, saying repeatedly that Kim Jong Un had assured him in private conversations he was ready to give up his nuclear arms.

A former top US diplomat for Asia, Daniel Russel, said the setback was to be expected and warned Trump he is engaged in a long negotiation that would not produce easy quick, made for television results that the president likely wants.

"We expected the US to bring constructive measures to build confidence in accordance with the spirit of the US-NK Summit", the statement carried by state-run news agency KCNA said.
