Statue of Liberty Climber Speaks Out Against Trump Immigration Policy

WATCH LIVE: Woman climbs base of Statue of Liberty in New York

Okoumou has since been arrested and charged with federal trespassing and disorderly conduct.

The protester was charged with trespassing, interference with government agency functions for what the US attorney called a "dangerous stunt".

She was released on her own recognizance after she posted bail.

The group said that Okoumou's decision to climb the statue was not a part of its action. She said she did it because of the Trump administration's zero-tolerance immigration policy, which has separated thousands of young children from their parents.

Wearing a "Rise and Resist" T-shirt, Okoumou spent almost four hours on the statue, the fabled symbol of welcome to immigrants in NY harbor, forcing police into a risky retrieval mission and causing the evacuation of Liberty Island on Wednesday. Members of the Rise and Resist group gathered outside court in Manhattan ahead of the appearance to show their support, reports CBS New York.

Yesterday, for immigrant activist Therese Patricia Okoumou, protestingmeant scaling the Statue of Liberty in a courageous demonstration against Trump's terrible anti-immigration policies on the very day meant to mark America's independence.

"But I think the message was sent: No child belongs in a cage", she said outside of court.

Okoumou, a Congolese immigrant living in Staten Island, emerged from the court building wearing a black shirt with the words: "White Supremacy is Terrorism" and was greeted by dozens of supporters.

This time it could be coming home: Fans roar on England
England had looked bereft when Colombia drew level in the dying seconds of a match that had long since escaped the control of the referee.

A woman walks around on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island in New York Harbor on July 4, 2018. You see that guys that went up there.

The woman told the authorities that she wouldn't come down from the statue until "all the children are released", according to CNN. "I wouldn't have done it", said the President, "I would have said, 'Let's get some nets, and let's wait till she comes down".

She climbed 25 feet up Lady Liberty from the public observation deck and perched up there for hours as officers tried to talk her down. Her protest turned into a almost three-hour standoff with police. After about three hours, officials were able to pull her down.

If convicted, Okoumou would face up to six months behind bars on each count.

Cruise operator Statue Cruises said it had to turn away more than 2,000 visitors waiting to take their tour to the famed statue.

The copper-pounded skin is only the thickness of two pennies but "it's strong", he said. In his lawsuit, Davidson said his replica "brought a new face to the iconic statue - a face which audiences found appeared more "fresh-faced, ' "sultry" and even 'sexier" than the original located in NY". "She's survived quite well".

The park service was reviewing security videotape to try to determine how the woman made the climb, Willis said.

Outside court afterward, Okoumou thanked the U.S. Park Police for their courtesy and professionalism, but said the government's "draconian policy" on immigration had to end.
