Samsung expects second-quarter profits to miss analysts estimates

Samsung Galaxy X foldable battery

The world's biggest maker of memory chips, smartphones and TVs said April-June operating profit would grow 5.2 percent to 14.8 trillion Korean won ($13.2 billion), just missing an average estimate of 14.9 trillion won from 18 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.

"It's a bit disappointing", Ko Gyeong-beom at Yuanta Securities Korea told AFP, noting the company had posted expectation-beating operating profits for several quarters. The Galaxy X will likely not cannibalize sales for the Galaxy S10, as the foldable smartphone is expected to be a niche device with a price tag that may go as high as around $1,800, almost double the price of the $1,000 iPhone X by rival Apple.

Samsung revealed in a press release that its consolidated sales for the second quarter were around 58 trillion won or U.S.$52 billion.

Weak LCD display prices are also blamed for the disappointing results, they said. The iPhone 8 was trailed by the Galaxy S9 Plus, iPhone X, Xiaomi Redmi 5A, and the iPhone 8 Plus.

Malaysia: Ex-PM Najib Razak given bail after pleading not guilty
He has told the public not to believe the reports saying: "I have not had a chance to defend myself". Some members of Najib's UMNO party chanted and held up placards in support of their former leader.

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S10 in February 2019. The device will employ foldable display panels, which is expected to go into mass production this summer. Now, an exclusive report from AllAboutSamsung is offering some technical details on the S10's triple-camera setup.

"We are preparing for foldable phones very intensely".

KitGuru Says: This is evidence of how competitive the smartphone space is getting when even Samsung are having issues selling their flagship devices.

Moreover, a Chinese rumor claims that Samsung SDI is already manufacturing the batteries for the Galaxy X model.
