Woman's Legs Amputated Following Bahamas Boat Explosion

Four of the injured Americans were airlifted to a hospital in St Petersburg Florida with the help of the US Coastguard

Stefanie Schaffer, left, had to have both legs amputated after she was severely injured in a Bahamas tour boat explosion Saturday. She is now in a medically-induced coma in a Nassau, Bahamas hospital.

A GoFundMe campaign to assist with the Schaffer's medical and travel expenses has raised more than $80,000 as of Monday evening.

It is not yet clear what caused the explosion on the 40ft (12m) chartered vessel, minutes into the trip off Barraterre island in the Exuma Cays.

Video of the explosion's aftermath was shot by a passenger on another tour boat that came to the rescue.

A Shoals native and his wife were celebrating their 15th anniversary in the Bahamas when a boat they were on exploded.

The U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene, transporting injured Americans to St. Pete using an HC-130 Hercules helicopter from its Clearwater station.

Her brother, George Schaffer Jr., said in a Facebook post that Stefanie had two broken arms, a broken wrist a fractured spine and internal injuries to her kidneys, spleen and liver.

Maleka Jackson's family spoke out today, saying she was "a light into the world". He said both of his sisters, Stefanie and Brooke, were on the boat with their mother and stepfather Stacey and Paul Bender.

- An American tourist is dead after a fiery boating accident in the Bahamas that sent nine others to the hospital over the weekend. Schaffer will need spinal surgery for an L1 lumbar disk fracture, her family said.

Chester Cooper, a member of parliament for Exumas and Ragged Island, identified the person who died as an American woman.

They helped rush dancer Stefanie Schaffer, 22, to shore and then a hospital to be treated for her horrific injuries.

She is now a senior at Castleton University, a liberal arts school in Vermont.
