Lopez Obrador elected Mexico’s new president with 53 per cent of vote

Reports Show Lopez Obrador With Landlside Win in Mexico Election

CITY (AP) _ U.S. President Donald Trump is sending his congratulations to Mexico's Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on his apparent victory in Sunday's presidential election.

The brash U.S. leader has also threatened to tear up NAFTA, the two-decade-old North American Free Trade Agreement. Lopez Obrador - popularly known as AMLO - published a book past year that was sharply critical of Trump, fueling concern he might prove more combative with Mexico's largest trading partner.

Trump suggested that Mexico can help the United States "until we straighten out our immigration laws, which have been bad for many, many years, decades".

Lopez Obrador spoke to the crowd there around midnight, saying to loud applause: "Today one stage has ended and we are going to begin another one - we are going to transform Mexico!"

"We are going to defend the migrants from Mexico, from Central America, from the whole American continent and all the migrants of the world that out of necessity have to abandon their villages to go seek a better life in the United States; it is a human right that we are going to defend for Mexicans and for all migrants", he said in a video posted to his campaign website.

The presidential win of leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is set to usher in a new era in Mexico, with the candidate riding a wave of voter discontent to a landslide win in the presidency and casting uncertainty on the future of Mexico's landmark energy reform. "I look very much forward to working with him", tweeted President Trump on Sunday evening before the leftist Obrador's vote count was projected to be around 53 percent.

Lopez Obrador has promised a "transformation" of Mexico and pledged to give scholarships or paid apprenticeships to youth, and increase support payments for the elderly.

Lopez Obrador, 64, is making his third presidential bid.

But after winning the election, he told Milenio TV he would respect the ongoing talks, with the aim of forging a deal that is good for Mexico.

Nova Scotia adopts new heat warning system
Even those not specifically at risk are encouraged to stay inside or in the shade, and to limit outdoor activity in the heat. The Atlantic region's heat wave is expected to break midweek, and Southern Ontario's should only last until Friday.

"We have to be very responsible and try to resolve the situation in Mexico", said Urzua, who describes himself, and Lopez Obrador, as fiscal conservatives.

Speaking late on Sunday night as results trickled in, he vowed to tackle corruption, get a handle on Mexico's violent war on drugs and focus on poverty and inequality.

Lopez Obrador's coalition is also within striking distance of a congressional majority - a coup for a party contesting its first national elections.

Amid widespread frustrations with the status quo, all of the candidates have tried to paint themselves as the agent of real change.

Mexican presidents serve six years and can not be re-elected. But he now supports reaching an agreement with the United States and Canada, though talks have been stalled over Trump administration demands for higher USA content and a "sunset clause" in the 1994 trade agreement.

Last year, Mexico recorded more homicides than at any point in its modern history, and it is on track to break that record this year.

"It's worth cautioning that we still have little clarity on Amlo's economic policies", said Edward Glossop, an economist at Capital Economics. He later joined the Party of the Democratic Revolution and more recently formed his own party, the National Regeneration Movement - known as MORENA.

He said Mexico's "very strong" immigration laws could be used to help keep illegal immigrants away from the USA border.

Lopez Obrador said he will propose that his own experts be included in the talks, but will respect Mexico's current negotiating team as they continue to represent Mexico until he takes office December 1.
