Nova Scotia adopts new heat warning system

ThermometerSized

High heat and humidity will return for Tuesday.

The adopted criteria includes a daytime temperature of 29 degrees Celsius or higher and nighttime temperature of 16 degrees or higher or a humidex of 36 degrees Celsius or higher.

They planned to visit thousands more as the heat was expected to continue until Friday.

The spate of deaths may seem high, but Dr. Mylene Drouin, Montreal's regional director of Public Health, says it could have been much deadlier.

In response to the extended heat warning, the city has opened a number of cooling centres around Toronto.

The new system is a partnership between Environment and Climate Change Canada, Health Canada and the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness.

Jorge Sampaoli will leave Argentina job this week
The last goal they conceded before Pepe's equaliser was in a friendly against Austria in November 2017. Pele remains the youngest ever among them, though, at 17 years, 244 days during the 1958 semi-final.

Toronto's longest heat wave was 12 days in 1953, but the city sees a heat wave lasting a week or so about every five to 10 years, Ms. Hobelman said. Witnesses say the small pool was at capacity at the time, and there was one lifeguard on duty.

Humidex values reaching 43 are expected.

Extreme heat affects everyone, Environment Canada said. However, the risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors. The Atlantic region's heat wave is expected to break midweek, and Southern Ontario's should only last until Friday.

Even those not specifically at risk are encouraged to stay inside or in the shade, and to limit outdoor activity in the heat.

The Salvation Army was out at Gore Park handing out bottles of water reminding people to heed the warnings and protect themselves, and police have already received a number of calls including one on Appleby Line and Upper Middle Road in Burlington where they rescued a dog from a hot auto where the temperature was 66 degrees.
