Not Good: Samsung Phones Texting Photos to Random People

Samsung phones are sending photos to their owner's contacts without their permission, according to reports.

Business Insider writes that the highly problematic bug is exclusive to the company's most recent phones, meaning the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus. It also appears that the Messages app does not leave any evidence that the messages were sent, but users discovered them via their T-Mobile log. RCS is a messaging standard that aims to replace SMS and work on Android devices across carriers, offering iMessage-like features including read receipts, typing indicators, group chat, more lengthy messages, and high-resolution photo sharing.

Affected individuals say their phones have started sending messages to one of their contacts with their full photo gallery.

One person said the app sent their photo albums to their girlfriend at 2.30am without them knowing - there was no trace of the transfer on the phone, although it showed up in their T-Mobile US account. Errors included scheduled text messages ending up in the wrong threads.

Samsung is encouraging those experiencing this issue to call the company directly at 1-800-SAMSUNG.

Police say those who were arrested were processed on the scene and released. She said that the last two weeks have been really consumed by this issue.

The messages in question are being sent through the default Samsung Messages app, with reports stating that the app doesn't show users the files were sent.

For now, it is recommended that users do not update to the latest Samsung Messages app until Samsung fixes the issues.

T-Mobile issued its update for the Google-backed system this week to US Samsung handsets, fueling speculation it was behind the bug. You can protect yourself or your pictures by revoking Samsung message's permission to access your photos.

"We are aware of the reports regarding this matter and our technical teams are looking into it", a Samsung spokesperson told Mashable over email.
