[BREAKING] Croatia Vs Denmark enters penalty shoot-out
Croatia beat Denmark in a dramatic penalty shootout on Sunday to progress to the World Cup quarter-finals.
Denmark made a dream start, taking the lead through Mathias Jorgensen, who scrambled home a loose ball amidst a body of defenders after just 58 seconds.
Liverpool defender Lovren glanced Luka Modric's free-kick wide late in the first period, before the sides played out a keenly-contested - and goalless - second half.
It came at the end of a largely disappointing tie - and one that had seen Luka Modric spurn a golden chance to snatch a late victor when his penalty shortly before the end of extra-time was superbly saved by Kasper Schmeichel. Their tally of two goals is the lowest of the 16 teams left in the competition, while only three sides of the 32 that started Russian Federation 2018 had fewer shots on goal in the group phase.
A scuffed clearance and an inadvertent header off Danish midfielder Martin Delaney left Mario Mandzukic with a good chance that he gobbled up, shooting beyond Schmeichel as Croatia soon levelled.
Kasper Schmeichel - With 2 clean sheets in 3 matches, Schmeichel has already stamped his authority on this side.
Yussuf Poulsen - 7 - When Denmark attacked, the lively lynchpin was extremely threatening, and always looked capable of producing a moment of brilliance for his side.
Perhaps, in part, it is because Iniesta's brilliance has been backed up by achievements on the world stage - he scored the winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final - while Modric has not hit the same heights with Croatia.
"Kasper did all he could to ensure we won the match, both in extra time and the penalty shootout", he said.
Japan make last 16 on disciplinary rule despite Poland loss
They will be favorites against Poland , who have lost their two matches and have no chance of reaching the last 16. GOAL - TUNISIA - 1-1 - Really well worked equalizer. "What if we conceded another goal and it was 0-2?" he said.
Danijel Subasic saved three penalties, and Croatia's World Cup hopes.
Forwards: Mario Mandzukic (Juventus/ITA), Ivan Perisic (Inter Milan/ITA), Nikola Kalinic (AC Milan/ITA), Andrej Kramaric (Hoffenheim/GER), Marko Pjaca (Schalke/GER), Ante Rebic (Eintracht/GER).
There was an air of expectation that Croatia's "golden generation" of players, including Modric, Rakitic and Ivan Perisic, would rise to the occasion but there was little urgency, spark or flair about Zlatko Dalic's team after the early action.
It promises to be a fascinating encounter as Croatia take on Denmark for a place in the quarterfinals.
CROATIA SCORE! Rakitic sends Schmeichel the wrong way from the spot and Croatia are into the quarter finals of the World Cup!
45' - Substitution: Denmark's Lasse Schöne replaces Andreas Christensen.
65' - Croatia gets a chance with a well-placed corner, but the Denmark defense holds strong and clears the ball.
Nicolai Jorgensen (for Cornelius 66) - 5 - Entered the fray in a like-for-like swap with Cornelius, and provided his side with an equally effective outlet up top.
