Supreme Court Justice Kennedy's retirement promises huge battle for greens, others

If a reshaped Supreme Court tosses abortion decisions back to states several would move fast to outlaw the procedures

The business relationship between Justin Kennedy and Trump was previously noted by the Financial Times, which reported last year that "Justin Kennedy, a trader who arrived from Goldman to become one of Mr Trump's most trusted associates over a 12-year spell at Deutsche, is the son of a Supreme Court justice".

U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the coming U.S. Supreme Court vacancy, his chief of staff, the upcoming summit with Russian Federation, tariffs and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation on Friday while aboard Air Force One en route from Washington to his private golf club in New Jersey.

During the 2016 presidential campaign Trump said he would seek to place a "pro-life justice on the court".

He plans to have at least one or two candidates visit him over the weekend at his private golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey, and his search will shift into high-gear on Monday, once he returns to the White House.

He said he will not ask candidates whether they would overturn a 1973 ruling in the Roe v. Wade case, which established a woman's right to an abortion, nor would he discuss gay rights with them.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, who is retiring at the end of July, was considered the swing vote on the court to uphold abortion rights.

It gives giving President Trump the opportunity to solidify a conservative majority on the top court. "So we want Roe to be overturned. and we expect that".

"It is exciting though, right?" said Trump.

Republicans now hold majorities in both congressional chambers. But Republican Senator John McCain, who has an aggressive form of brain cancer, has been absent from the Senate for months, meaning that if all Senate Democrats vote against Trump's eventual nominee, it would take only one Republican defection to defeat his pick.

The president says he is proud of Neil Gorsuch, the judge he appointed past year, so he is looking for a nominee who is relatively similar.

The only name Trump mentioned was U.S. Sen.

While polling on abortion is hard and yields mixed results depending on how the questions are asked, multiple polls suggest a majority of Americans believe abortion should be legal in at least some cases, particularly in early pregnancy.

Asked when the probe would be concluded, he said: "Very soon".

Hawkins said her group has more than 1,200 chapters around the country, and organizers will encourage members to lobby their senators during the confirmation process. Kennedy essentially protected the Roe v. Wade decision when he sided with the plurality in the 1992 case of Planned Parenthood v. Casey.

Steven Law, president of the Senate Leadership Fund, a campaign group aligned with McConnell, said the group is running digital ads in 10 states that Trump won in 2016 where Democratic senators are now up for re-election. Collins, who favors a woman's right to choose on abortion, joined like-minded Republican Lisa Murkowski at the White House meeting.

"This Supreme Court vacancy puts issues that affect every single American in the balance, from a woman's constitutionally protected right to make her own health care decisions to privacy, equality and civil rights", Harris tweeted.
