Immigration: Democrats Obstruct and the GOP Falters - Again

A mother migrating from Honduras holds her 1-year-old child as surrendering to U.S. Border Patrol agents after illegally crossing the border Monday

The House overwhelmingly rejected a Republican compromise bill on immigration Wednesday - only 121 Republicans backed it, compared to 193 for an earlier, more hard-line measure.

In his latest display of whiplash on the issue, Trump tweeted, "HOUSE REPUBLICANS SHOULD PASS THE STRONG BUT FAIR IMMIGRATION BILL, KNOWN AS GOODLATTE II, IN THEIR AFTERNOON VOTE TODAY, EVEN THOUGH THE DEMS WON'T LET IT PASS IN THE SENATE".

That's what the Congressman said last week, before Republicans were unable to pass two immigration bills in the GOP-controlled U.S. House of Representatives.

Besides creating a pathway to citizenship for some young immigrants, the defeated bill would provide $25 billion for Trump to build his coveted wall on the border with Mexico.

Under the proposal, children who cross illegally with parents or adult guardians would no longer be separated - an issue that stirred significant controversy last week and led to a presidential order and federal court ruling. With less than five months before all House members will be up for re-election, conservatives will have to explain to voters why they still havent funded Trumps border wall, and moderates will go home empty handed on their promise to give immigrants brought to the U.S.as children a path to citizenship. The Senate rejected three proposals in February, including one reflecting Trump's hard-line policies and two bipartisan plans.

It was the second time in recent days that a Republican immigration bill didn't make it through the House. "But the last thing I want to do is undercut a vote on what is a great consensus bill".

No, after you: Why England and Belgium may want to be second
Marcus Rashford is expected to take Raheem Sterling's place and Dele Alli is available again after training for the past two days. Romelu Lukaku is a doubt for Belgium's crucial World Cup top-of-the-table clash with England , report Sky Sports .

That is a reference to an estimate by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) of how many illegal immigrants ultimately might have become citizens under the bill.

Ultimately, the legislation was only officially authored by House Judiciary Chairman Robert W. Goodlatte, Homeland Security Chairman Michael McCaul and moderate GOP Reps. This bill eliminates most family reunification.

"I want them to do what they want", Trump said, CNN reported. When it comes to immigration, I will always choose policy reforms that will improve border security, reprioritize the allocation of immigrant visas, and prevent future illegal immigration over continued inaction.

First lady Melania Trump plans to visit immigration facilities later this week, her spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said on Tuesday, without giving further details. "I think we are proving to ourselves that Republicans can not pass an immigration bill". Republicans remain genuinely divided on the issue but it remains unclear just what Democrats agree on except opening up our borders.

House Republicans who have been working with Democrats to get a strong bi-partisan bill were clear that they got very little help or guidance from the White House on what kind of bill if any that President Trump would sign.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week that prohibits family separation but the order does not address the estimated 2,300 children who are now being held at DHS facilities.
