Real estate bet big (and lost) on outgoing Rep. Joe Crowley

A 28-year-old Democratic Socialist just ousted a powerful, 10-term congressman in New York

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of the South Bronx handily defeated 10-term incumbent Rep. Joseph Crowley of Queens in New York's 14th District.

The Associated Press, once the election was called, tweeted: "BREAKING: U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley defeated by young challenger in Democratic primary in NY". But all that wasn't enough to stop the 28-year-old Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the Democratic Socialists who previously organized for Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign. She had street cred as a former Bernie Sanders organizer, and was endorsed by New York's premier progressive celebrity, gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary.

Despite Crowley's loss, the governor, who is up for reelection later this year, reportedly said the only "common denominator" was "an activated Democratic Party". Crowley, and Irish-American party organization man (he is chairman of the Queens Democratic Party), is like a holdover from a different era of NY politics.

Ocasio-Cortez, however, has an important trick up her sleeve: she understands and connects with the constituents she is running to represent. Interviewed in Vogue on Monday, Ocasio-Cortez said of socialism: "There is no other force, there is no other party, there is no other real ideology out there right now that is asserting the minimum elements necessary to lead a dignified American life".

Trent Bridge: England's records-breaking venue
For Australia captain Tim Paine , the hurt was even worse than the blow to the face he suffered while keeping wicket in Cardiff. Following the shambolic defeat, the former English cricketers ripped apart their Ashes-rivals and ridiculed them on Twitter.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reacts to her primary win.

"Our district is overwhelmingly people of color, it's working class, it's very immigrant - and it hasn't had the representation we've needed", Ocasio-Cortez, a second-generation Puerto Rican, told HuffPost earlier this month. She raised only $200,000 during her campaign, compared to $3 million that Crowley drummed up. So Big Money Democrats and Big Money groups that want to win over Democrats deploy swarms of metaphors and euphemisms to distract from their fundamentally anti-democratic enthusiasm for corporate cash.

Ocasio-Cortez ran on a strong left-wing platform, including support for universal health care and a federal guarantee of jobs.

In his one televised debate with Ocasio-Cortez, Crowley briefly went on the offensive, telling viewers that his opponent had once said that New Yorks gun laws didnt need to be applied in other states. "I think that we have the grounds to do it".

Greenwald claimed Israel had shot "more than 1,000 peaceful, unarmed protesters in Gaza" as he formulated his question-MSNBC acknowledged numerous Palestinians at the border fence were armed and attempting to breach the security barrier-and read out a tweet quoting Ocasio-Cortez calling the violence a "massacre" perpetrated by the Israelis. " The profiles paint a picture not just of a courageous underdog fighting for social justice at a time in which it's needed more than ever, but perhaps also contain hints of progressive things to come, whether or not the Democratic or Republican parties are ready to face them".
