Trump orders halt to family separations

She also said the groups want Walmart to denounce the Trump administration's policy and for its CEO to encourage President Donald Trump to rescind it immediately, something Trump said Wednesday he will do. Children can't be jailed with their parents.

"We're going to have strong, very strong borders, but we're going to keep the families together", said Trump who said he didn't like the "sight" or "feeling" of children separated from their parents. That's what he did on Wednesday.

"It's about keeping families together while at the same time making sure that we have a very powerful, very strong border", Trump said as he signed the order in a hastily arranged Oval Office gathering.

A new report by BuzzFeed News revealed how foreign nationals are now having second thoughts before traveling to the U.S. -Mexico border and crossing illegally with their children thanks to Trump's immigration crackdown. In order to hold families together indefinitely, it directs Attorney General Jeff Sessions to try to modify a 1997 court agreement, known as the Flores settlement, that prohibits the federal government from keeping children, even with their parent, in immigration detention for more than 20 days.

Under previous United States administrations, immigrants caught crossing the border for the first time tended to be issued with court summonses and released.

If Gee agrees to the changes sought by Trump, the 20-day limit would be waived so that parents and children would be held together.

Trump also would have us believe that most of these children don't deserve our empathy, that they are pawns used by adults to exploit the system.

Addressing pool reporters on Wednesday, President Trump said: "I'll be signing something in a little while that's going to do that".

President Trump Injects Fresh Chaos Into Immigration Debate
Bill Pascrell Jr. of New Jersey said after he emerged from the ICE facility in his state. "I have to have that", Trump said. Trump continued to falsely assert Friday that separating migrant families was a law spearheaded by Democrats.

Homeland Security Secretary Nielsen traveled to Capitol Hill Wednesday afternoon to brief lawmakers. In a media call after the order was released, senior Justice Department official Gene Hamilton suggested that, absent new authority from a federal judge to detain children for longer than is now allowed, the practice of separating families may resume at the 20-day mark. They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the effort before its official announcement.

Trump, a frequent viewer of cable television newscasts, had recognized the family separation issue was a growing political problem, White House sources said. She was heckled at a restaurant Tuesday evening and has faced protesters at her home.

The House of Representatives is expected to vote on two bills created to end family separations formally and deal with other immigration issues. They want open borders, which breeds frightful crime. Republicans want security. But I am working on something - it never ends!'

On May 7, Sessions discussed the "zero-tolerance" policy for illegal entry on the southwest border. Under the Obama administration, such families were usually referred for civil deportation proceedings, not requiring separation.

ICE operates two large family detention centers in Texas and a smaller facility in Pennsylvania, with a combined capacity for about 3,000 beds.

It does not specifically address what will happen to families and children who have already been separated.

The more conservative bill would deny the chance of future citizenship to "Dreamers", who are immigrants brought illegally into the United States years ago as children.

Kay Bellor, vice president for programs at Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, among the largest refugee resettlement agencies in the USA, said: "While children will no longer be ripped from the arms of their parents for the sole objective of deterring immigration, they will go to jail with their parents".
