'No disrespect': Phil Mickelson putts moving ball at US Open

Phil Mickelson’s frustration boils over in shocking rule breach

Back on the 13 green Sunday - less than 24 hours after taking a two-shot penalty for hitting a moving ball and recording a sextuple-bogey 10 - Mickelson poured in a 10-footer and raised his arms in mock triumph, as if he'd finally won that elusive major title.

A number of fellow professionals felt Mickelson should have been disqualified or withdrawn himself, but he took his place in the field for the final round and covered the front nine in three under par before dropping a shot on the 11th.

Mickelson stayed in the tournament, following up his third-round 81 with a closing 1-under par 69 on Sunday to finish the tournament tied for 48th at 16 over.

Look, I don't mean disrespect to anybody. "He played a moving ball", Bodenhamer said.

The five-time major champion jogged after the ball to keep it from rolling away from the hole and hit it back to where he had been standing.

"Phil really did want to understand how the rule operates", Davis said, via Randall Mell of the Gold Channel. It's amusing. I just wanted to get to the next hole and did not see that happening without the two shots'.

'It was going to go down in the same spot behind the bunker. I don't know if it would have saved me a shot or not. I don't know if I would've been able to save a shot or whatnot, but I know it's a two-stroke penalty. I wasn't going to have a shot.

Mickelson was asked if he thought what he did was disrespectful to the championship.

Sweden shooting: Three dead in Malmo cafe attack
They also declined to give any detail of the victims although reports said several of them were well known to the police. The police have stated there is no danger to the public, denying that the shooting was a terror attack of some sort.

The Englishman told Omnisport: "He was making a statement that, "This is ridiculous and I'm going to show you how ridiculous this is".

Two-time US Open champion Curtis Strange added: "I've never seen anything like that from a world class player in my life." whereas LPGA star Christina Kim went even further, describing the scenes as "ghastly". "I took two shots and got to play the next hole".

Mickelson's shocking display in the third round stunned playing partner Andrew Johnston, who called it "a moment of madness".

"I think he was a chump", Hopkins stated bluntly, via Brendan Porath of SB Nation. "It was clearly not my finest moment and I'm sorry". At this rate, he'll just be glad to leave Shinnecock Hills in one piece.

"Sometimes it gets a little goofy, sure, but it's all within the rules", he said.

"Ethically it [Mickelson's conduct] was incorrect, it shouldn't have been done and is not a good example to kids, but I can see why he did it".

The first two days of the tournament have seen near capacity crowds flood onto the course, about 26,000 on Thursday and more than 29,000 on Friday including spectators, vendor staff and volunteers.
