Audi chief Rupert Stadler arrested over 'dieselgate'

Germany: Audi CEO Rupert Stadler detained by police as part of

German authorities on Monday detained the chief executive of Volkswagen's Audi division, Rupert Stadler, as part of a probe into the manipulation of emissions controls.

Munich prosecutors are investigating whether Stadler acted swiftly enough to stop deliveries of manipulated Audi models in Europe once emissions problems had emerged, a person familiar with the matter has told Reuters.

But Dudenhoeffer said VW's supervisory board may want to reconsider its stance when it meets today.

Stadler was arrested earlier today after prosecutors in Munich suggested there was a risk he might try to suppress evidence and hinder their investigation.

However, as Winterkorn remains in Germany U.S. authorities haven't arrested him.

VW does not plan to appeal the ruling, which came after prosecutors established that the brand had sold more than 10.7 million cars between mid-2007 and 2015 which were fitted with an emissions test defeat device. The German government previous year accused Audi of cheating on its emissions tests for high-end models.

Audi had no immediate comment.

Trump suggests separation of families at border is a negotiating tool
The leader of the hard-right House Freedom Caucus, Representative Mark Meadows, said he knew of at least one error in the draft. That changed Friday morning when President Donald Trump walked out to the White House's North Lawn .

The infamous Dieselgate scandal surfaced in 2015 and has cost the Volkwagen Group billions of dollars.

The move is an extension of the emissions scandal that has rocked Volkswagen since 2015 and led to billions in fines, the arrest of executives and the indictment in the USA of its former CEO. Until now German prosecutors have only questioned former VW CEO Dr. Martin Winterkorn. Until now, backing of the Porsche and Piech families, who control the world's biggest vehicle maker, ensured him continuing in the role he's held since 2007.

A total of 20 people are under suspicion in the probe.

Audi's chief executive, Rupert Stadler, pictured at the Annual Media Conference of Volkswagen AG last month, was arrested Monday.

The arrest comes one week after Germany imposed a €1 billion ($1.2 billion) penalty on Audi's parent company, Volkswagen, for rigging diesel engine emissions worldwide.

German prosecutors named Stadler and one other Audi executive as suspects for fraud and false advertisement in the vehicle maker's continuing emissions scandal, Efe news reported.

Audi confirmed the arrest to AFP, declining to give further details.
