DOJ: Comey's handling of Clinton email investigation unconventional but not biased

FBI director Christopher A Wray

In a highly anticipated report released Thursday, the Justice Department's internal watchdog said those messages sullied the FBI's reputation and "cast a cloud" over its investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton's emails, even if they did not affect the investigation itself.

In a tweet, the president lashed out at Comey, as well as FBI agent Peter Strzok and lawyer Lisa Page, who were removed from Robert MuellerRobert Swan MuellerSasse: "US should applaud choice of Mueller to lead Russian Federation probe MORE's special counsel investigation last summer over concerns of anti-Trump bias".

As part of the inspector general (IG) investigation into the the FBI's handling of the 2016 election, the Justice Department has found that Peter Strzok, the former chief of the FBI's counterespionage unit, promised to stop Trump from winning the election.

Trump says in a pair of tweets that now that he's back from his summit with North Korea, "the thought process must sadly go back to the Witch Hunt".

Trump quickly retweeted at least a half dozen posts about the report from the "Fox & Friends" morning show on Fox News Channel.

"But our review did not find evidence to connect the political views expressed in these messages to the specific investigative decisions that we reviewed". "No he's not. We'll stop it".

"I just can't imagine the systematic disassembly of the progress we made over the last 8 years", the attorney, dubbed "FBI Attorney 2" in the report, later added.

A May 2016 email from FBI investigator Peter Strzok shows the agency knew at that time some classified information had been hacked from Clinton's private server.

The report criticized Comey for publicly announcing his recommendation against criminal charges for Clinton.

FBI Director Christopher Wray said that "conduct in the report" had already been referred to the department's disciplinary arm, but he would not say which employees had been referred or for what conduct.

By the time NY police had confiscated the laptop of the lecherous Anthony Weiner (then-husband of Huma Abedin, Hillary's top aide), Comey, having already promised congressional investigators - under oath - that he would let them know if new evidence emerged, had been left with no choice.

Those text exchanges caused the inspector general to evaluate whether any of Strzok's decisions were affected by political considerations, and raised concerns that there was a "willingness to take official action to impact the presidential candidate's electoral prospects".

"We identified numerous Federal Bureau of Investigation employees, at all levels of the organization and with no official reason to be in contact with the media, who were nevertheless in frequent contact with reporters", the report said.

In a wide-ranging interview Friday morning with Fox and Friends, Trump said that he did not want to get involved in Justice Department matters but that what former FBI Director James Comey had done "was a bad thing to the people".

The Inspector General also examined whether FBI employees leaked information about investigations of the Clinton Foundation charitable organization and emails in a bid to help Trump's campaign.

President Trump is likely to seize on the report to argue he was right to fire the former FBI director, who had been leading an investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

So the laptop's evidence simmered for a month until just before the 2016 election, Tapper tweets.

Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz has painted his masterpiece.

Echoing language first used by President Barack Obama, Comey characterized Clinton's use of private email servers for official state communications as "extremely careless".

But in a twist that might have come straight out of the laptop of a Hollywood screenwriter, Page and Strzok's correspondence has arguably wound up giving a huge political boost to Trump.
