To build express line to Chicago's O'Hare

Chicago Picks Musk's Boring Co. for O'Hare Express Service

Elon Musk's Boring Co is the victor in a bid to build a multibillion-dollar high-speed express train to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. U.S. cities are looking for alternatives to overcrowded highways and impossibly expensive subways. We got a look at the future station at the beginning of a 17-mile system of twin underground tunnels carrying electric vehicles at speeds of up to 150 miles per hour.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, left, listens as Tesla CEO and founder of the Boring Company Elon Musk, right, speaks at a news conference Thursday, June 14, 2018, in Chicago.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel of Chicago a year ago called for proposals for the project which include designing, building, funding, operating, and to maintain the O'Hare Express operating system via a public-private agreement with the city. The Boring Company was launched about 18 months ago and has been digging a test tunnel in Los Angeles for a high-speed public transit system called the Loop.

Musk is banking on being able to tunnel much faster than any other company, although his technology remains unproven. The final destination will be at a new $8.5 billion global terminal Emmanuel has announced for O'Hare.

The Boring Company has been focused on developing their boring tunnel technology. This tunnel is now limited to Hawthorne. Video renderings of the system show autonomous vehicles that can pick up passengers at street level and then move them along concrete tubes to their destination.

Some are skeptical such a project will be built.

The system would take the form of an underground tunnel system between O'Hare and downtown Chicago's Block 37 complex. A lengthy write-up in The Chicago Tribune says that the total cost of the project could be around $1 billion, according to unnamed sources with knowledge on the matter.

The Boring Co. also has big plans for the Washington area.

A lease deal will need to be struck with the CTA to use its Block 37 station, and Rivkin said he "expects" that Boring will pay for usage. The city's last attempt at high-speed rail led to spending $400 million on a subway "superstation" that was ultimately abandoned.

The company's website says it has not yet determined the fare cost, but it "will be less than half the typical price of taxi/ride-share services", but more expensive than the cost to get to O'Hare using the Chicago Transit Authority's (CTA) Blue Line. The new system will come at a cost, however: A single fare will reportedly cost around $20.

"Dallas and Atlanta and NY will look at this and be sorry they didn't have it", said Emanuel in a separate interview.

In Los Angeles, the Boring Company has also proposed building a wider network of tunneled transit, one that incorporates Sherman Oaks to the north and the Long Beach Airport to the southeast of downtown L.A.

World Cup is awarded to North America
Late switchers included the Netherlands - which backed the Morocco bid - and South Africa, which supported the US-led bid. Not to mention the 2026 World Cup will coincide with the 250-year anniversary of the U.S.' independence.
