Nadal's Roland Garros set streak ended by Schwartzman

Timeline of Day 7 How Rafa Serena and Maria enjoyed a super Saturday at Roland Garros

Three consecutive breaks - two for Schwartzman - gave the 25-year-old underdog the advantage in the second set before the first rain break.

With his 37-set unbeaten streak at the French Open in jeopardy, Nadal broke back but struggled to cope with his opponent's powerful shots deep into the court - and dropped his serve twice more, crucially at 4-4, giving Schwartzman a chance to serve for the set he did not pass up.

The two remaining men's quarterfinals were suspended in progress and will resume Thursday.

The enforced interlude had clearly benefited Nadal, and assuming he gets the two points he needs to level the match he will start a strong favourite on Thursday.

Rafael Nadal was locked in an epic battle on Philippe-Chatrier before the rain ended play early on Wednesday night.

Nadal came into the match undefeated against the diminutive Argentine from their five previous meetings and was yet to lose a set en route to the last eight stage, while Schwartzman recorded a comeback five-set victory against Kevin Anderson in the fourth round.

Speaking on Eurosport's coverage of the Roland Garros, analyst Annabel Croft said Nadal had to overcome major stress to recover from being a set and break down.

Sharapova, playing at Roland Garros for the first time since 2015, suffered her most one-sided defeat at the Slams since a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Victoria Azarenka in the 2012 Australian Open final.
